Chapter 10: The Ripple Effect

By midday, the secure terminal in the safehouse began flashing amber alerts as major news outlets picked up breaking stories regarding the federal raids on the municipal police precinct. Headlines scrolled across the screen detailing the suspension of Chief Harrison and the seizure of internal records related to financial fraud and abuse of authority. Jason watched the live broadcast on the cabin's television, seeing familiar streets and buildings plastered across the national news. For the first time, the general public was getting a glimpse behind the polished PR facade of the department. Down in the city, the shockwaves were reverberating through every level of local government. Officers who had quietly tolerated the corruption out of fear were now rushing to cooperate with federal investigators, hoping to distance themselves from the sinking ship. In the living room, Rachel looked up from her coloring book as she heard the muted sound of news anchors discussing the department scandal. She walked over to the doorway, her yellow sweater now washed and folded neatly on a chair nearby, her pigtails tied back neatly with a new ribbon Sarah had found in her emergency kit. Are the bad men gone? Rachel asked softly, her voice carrying a fragile hope. Jason turned away from the screen and knelt down to her eye level, offering a reassuring smile. They don't have any power over you anymore, sweetheart. A lot of brave people are making sure they never hurt anyone again. Sarah walked over, joining them with a gentle touch on Rachel's shoulder. And you played the biggest part in that, Rachel. Because you were brave enough to speak the truth, even when they told you to stay quiet. Rachel leaned against Jason, the last lingering tension leaving her small frame. The ghosts of the past were finally being exorcised, replaced by the reality of safety and justice. Yet, Jason knew that structural reform required more than just arrests; it required a complete dismantling of the toxic culture that allowed such predators to thrive in the first place. The federal investigators were pushing forward with their depositions, and Jason knew that he and Sarah would soon have to return to the city to give their official testimonies before the grand jury, stepping back into the public eye to seal the case once and for all.
