Chapter 8 - The Sound of Splintering Wood

The thunderous crash of the front door caving in reverberated through the hollow halls of the mansion, shaking the very foundations of the estate. Graham didn’t hesitate. He grabbed Elena by the arm, pushing her firmly toward the narrow service staircase hidden behind the nursery’s walk-in closet.

“Move, Elena! Use the back corridor; it bypasses the main hall entirely,” Graham commanded, his voice a sharp whisper that brooked no argument.

Elena clutched Lily so tightly to her chest that the toddler let out a tiny, stifled gasp, the first sign of distress she had shown all night. Without another word, Elena turned and bolted down the dark, wood-paneled service stairs, her bare feet pattering against the steps as the sound of heavy combat boots reached the second-floor landing just yards away.

Graham stood in the center of the nursery, the matte-black Glock held firmly in both hands, his body angled toward the doorway. The flashing amber emergency lights painted his stern face in stark, dramatic contrasts. Through the open door, he could hear the distinct sound of rifle safeties clicking off one by one, followed by low, calculated tactical commands being barked in military cadence.

“Clear the west wing,” a harsh voice echoed down the hall. “Sweep every room. The target is the child. Eliminate any resistance.”

Graham’s finger tightened around the trigger. He stepped back into the shadows beside the doorframe, blending seamlessly into the dark wood paneling. The first mercenary stepped into the nursery doorway, his tactical helmet mounted with a glowing thermal scope, an assault rifle raised and sweeping the room.

Before the operative could adjust his aim, Graham stepped out of the shadows, slamming the heavy butt of his handgun directly into the side of the man’s helmet. The mercenary buckled instantly, collapsing silently onto the plush carpet without firing a single shot.

Graham caught the heavy body before it hit the floor, quickly dragging the unconscious man behind the nursery desk and stripping away his tactical vest, sliding the extra rifle magazines into his own pockets. He checked the headset radio crackling on the fallen man’s shoulder.

“West room secure. Moving to the master suite,” a voice buzzed through the static earpiece.

Graham pressed his finger to the transmit button. “Negative on the master suite. Target spotted heading toward the courtyard exit,” he growled, altering his voice just enough to pass through the digital compression.

“Copy that. All units converge on the rear courtyard,” the lead voice ordered blindly.

Graham let out a slow, controlled breath, stepping over the fallen operative and slipping out into the dimly lit hallway. He needed to buy Elena and Lily enough time to reach the underground panic room, but as he reached the top of the main staircase, he froze. Through the shattered remains of the front door far below, standing calmly in the center of the ruined foyer amidst shards of splintered oak and broken glass, was a figure he never expected to see inside the house.

It was a woman in an elegant, smoke-gray evening gown, her blonde hair perfectly coiffed, holding a silenced pistol aimed directly up the stairs at his chest.

“Drop the weapon, Graham,” a smooth, melodic voice called out up the stairwell. “You’re entirely out of your depth.”

Graham squinted through the gloom, recognizing the face of Elena’s closest confidante, Senator Clara Vance, smiling up at him with cold, murderous eyes.
