Chapter 11 - The Inside Man

The blinding beam of the tactical flashlight pierced the darkness, pinning Graham and Elena against the marble pillar like insects under a microscope. Behind the glare, the silhouette of a massive man stepped forward, the uniform badge of the estate’s private security detail catching the harsh white light. It was Miller, the head of their security team—a man Graham had trusted with his life and property for over seven years.
“Miller?” Graham squinted against the glaring light, his finger hovering over the trigger of his Glock. “You? After everything I’ve done for your family, you sold us out to Clara?”
Miller didn't lower his weapon; instead, the assault rifle remained firmly leveled at Graham’s chest, his face carved into an expression of grim, hardened resignation. He didn't smile, and there was no remorse in his dark eyes.
“It’s nothing personal, Mr. Vance,” Miller said flatly, his voice devoid of emotion. “People like Senator Clara don't ask for loyalty; they buy it. And when the price tag is enough to secure my family’s safety for the next three generations, you realize that corporate loyalty is just a fairy tale told to keep the wealthy sleeping soundly at night.”
Elena stepped out from behind Graham, her eyes flashing with fury despite the terror gripping her heart. “You idiot! Clara doesn't leave loose ends! The moment Vance and she take control of this estate, you’ll be the first one they eliminate to cover their tracks!”
Miller hesitated for a fraction of a second, his jaw tightening as her words hit home. But he quickly shook his head, hardening his resolve. “Maybe. But that’s a risk I have to take. Now drop the satellite phone, Mr. Vance. And put the handgun on the floor. Slowly.”
Graham stared at Miller, measuring the distance, calculating the angle of the light, and listening for any sound from the front foyer below where Senator Clara Vance was likely recovering from the shotgun blast. The satellite phone in Graham’s hand buzzed violently against his palm—the transmission to the federal marshals had successfully gone through, but they were still three minutes away.
“You’re making a fatal mistake, Miller,” Graham said, his voice dangerously calm as he slowly lowered his arm holding the Glock. “The federal marshals are already breaching the outer gates. You won't make it off this property alive.”
Miller let out a short, harsh laugh. “The gates are locked down, sir. No one is getting in tonight.”
Before Miller could finish his sentence, the heavy mahogany double doors at the end of the main hallway suddenly blew inward with a concussive blast that shattered the remaining windows and knocked Miller off his feet. Through the billowing smoke and sheets of pouring rain, three heavily armored federal agents in black tactical gear poured into the corridor, their weapons raised with absolute authority.
“Federal Marshals! Drop your weapons! Do it now!” the lead agent roared, his voice echoing off the walls.
Miller scrambled to raise his assault rifle, but before he could even shoulder the weapon, a flash of red light from a targeting laser locked onto his chest.
“Don't move!” the agent barked.
Miller froze, the assault rifle slipping from his fingers and clattering loudly against the hardwood floor. He raised his hands slowly over his head, defeated by the very authorities he thought he had successfully blocked out.
From the shadows near the stairs below, Senator Clara Vance stepped back into the flickering light, her calm, icy demeanor finally fracturing as she realized the game was entirely over. She slowly lowered her silenced pistol, dropping it to the marble floor with a quiet, defeated clatter.

“It seems,” Clara whispered, glaring up at Graham with absolute venom, “we both miscalculated.”
