Chapter 7 - The Perimeter Breach

The shrill wail of the security alarm echoed through the grand hallways of the estate, drowning out the roar of the coastal storm outside. The amber emergency lights on the walls began to flash in a frantic, rhythmic pulse, casting long, erratic shadows across the nursery floor. Vance didn’t flinch at the sudden chaos; instead, a cold, calculating smile spread across his scarred face. He grabbed the silver flash drive from the crib mattress, slipping it back into the inner pocket of his dark trench coat with agonizing slowness.
“It looks like your other unexpected guests have arrived, little brother,” Vance muttered, stepping casually toward the open window where the rain whipped the white curtains into a frenzy. “You might want to check the front gates before the local authorities decide to ask questions about your father’s estate.”
Graham lunged forward, his massive hands grabbing Vance by the lapels of his coat and slamming him hard against the brick wall beside the window. The impact knocked the wind out of Vance, but the older man’s eyes remained disturbingly calm, filled with a sick amusement.
“You aren't going anywhere until you tell me who triggered that alarm,” Graham snarled, his knuckles whitening as he tightened his grip.
“Look out the window, Graham,” Vance wheezed, a bloody grin stretching across his face. “You aren't the only one who wanted answers tonight.”
Graham threw Vance aside, sending him crashing into the floorboards, and rushed to the window. Through the sheeting rain and the flashing security lights, three black SUVs were idling near the base of the front steps, their high beams cutting blinding paths through the darkness. Armed figures in unmarked tactical gear were already pouring out of the vehicles, moving with terrifying military precision toward the heavy oak front doors.
Elena scrambled to her feet, rushing over to grab Lily into her arms. The toddler remained entirely silent, burying her blonde head into Elena’s shoulder with a chilling composure that defied her two years of age.
“They aren't police, Graham,” Elena cried out, her voice frantic as she stared down at the armed intruders below. “They’re Vance’s private enforcers. He brought an army to finish what he started ten years ago!”
Graham spun around, looking back into the nursery, but Vance was already gone. The open window flapped wildly in the wind, the rain slicking the exterior stone ledge where a rusted fire escape ladder led down into the darkness of the rear courtyard. Vance had slipped away like a ghost, leaving them trapped in a house surrounded by heavily armed mercenaries.
“Get down the back stairs to the panic room in the cellar,” Graham ordered, his voice dropping into a steely, commanding tone born of absolute desperation. He reached into his tuxedo jacket, pulling out a heavy, matte-black Glock 19 that he kept hidden in the study safe. He checked the magazine with a practiced click, the metal sound cutting sharply through the wailing alarm.
Elena clutched Lily tighter against her chest, her eyes wide with terror. “Graham, you can't fight an entire squad by yourself! They have automatic weapons, thermal optics—they’ll tear this house apart brick by brick!”
“I built this house, and I know every blind spot in these walls,” Graham said, his eyes locking onto hers with fierce, unyielding resolve. “Go. Now. If I don't meet you down there in ten minutes, lock the vault door and don't look back.”

Before Elena could argue, the heavy oak front door on the ground floor splintered inward with a deafening crash, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots marching up the marble foyer stairs.
