Arthur Vance stood on the porch, a thin, polite smile plastered across his face that failed to reach his cold, calculating eyes. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that smelled faintly of expensive cologne and damp earth. Vance smoothly sidestepped Evelyn, his gaze piercing into the foyer where Clara stood holding Leo’s hand. He spoke in a smooth, honeyed baritone that dripped with false paternal concern, claiming he was simply checking in on the family after receiving reports of domestic distress following the birthday celebration.
Clara stepped forward, placing herself squarely between Vance and the children. Her voice was remarkably steady, stripped of the hysteria that had defined her breakdown the day before. She demanded to know by what legal authority he had entered their property without an appointment or a court order. Vance’s smile tightened slightly; he was accustomed to intimidated mothers shrinking away from his presence, not standing their ground with cold logic. He casually reminded Clara of the enrollment contract she had signed years ago—a binding agreement that surrendered standard parental rights to the academy’s oversight board in exchange for educational sponsorship.
From the kitchen doorway, Leo quietly pressed record on his tablet, capturing every syllable of Vance’s veiled threats. Vance subtly gestured toward the two suit-clad associates lingering behind him on the porch, hinting that a formal assessment would take place immediately, with or without Clara’s cooperation. He commented cruelly on Lily’s uneven haircut, using it as fresh evidence of Clara’s alleged mental instability. Clara felt a hot surge of anger rise in her chest, but she tamped it down, remembering the flash drive resting safely in her pocket. She invited them inside, surprising both Vance and Evelyn, knowing that drawing them into the house would provide the definitive evidence needed to destroy their corrupt operation once and for all.
