Chapter 11: The Mountain Pursuit

The black sedan hung desperately close to their rear bumper, its high beams blinding Clara through the rearview mirror. The winding mountain road offered little room for error, with sheer rock faces on one side and a steep, unguarded drop-off into the dark canyon on the other. Lily began to whimper in the backseat, frightened by the sudden acceleration and the swaying motion of the car. Leo wrapped his arms tightly around his sister, offering calm words of comfort while staring out the side window at the terrifying void below. Evelyn clutched the dashboard, whispering frantic prayers under her breath as tires screeched against the damp asphalt.

Clara knew the terrain better than their pursuers. A few miles ahead lay an old logging road blocked by a rusted iron gate—a shortcut that only locals and those familiar with David’s property knew about. She eased off the gas momentarily, luring the pursuing sedan into attempting a reckless passing maneuver on a dangerous curve. As the black car surged alongside them, its engine roaring, Clara suddenly spun the steering wheel hard to the left, forcing their sedan into a sharp drift that squeezed past the logging road’s overgrown entrance just as the gate came into view.

The pursuing car overshot the turn entirely, its brakes locking up with a horrific screech of burning rubber as it skidded toward the edge of the cliff before sliding violently into a thick cluster of pine trees. Clara didn’t look back. She plunged the sedan down the dark, muddy logging trail, branches slapping against the side panels with loud, echoing cracks. The dense forest swallowed their vehicle in deep shadows, hiding them from view as the engine of the crashed sedan sputtered and died far behind them. They had bought themselves some precious time, but they knew Vance’s associates would soon track them down using local law enforcement contacts.
