Chapter 10: Flight into the Night

The suburban streets were quiet and dark as Clara’s sedan rolled out of the driveway without its headlights on, coasting down the slope until they were safely around the corner. Evelyn sat in the front passenger seat, clutching a roadmap and navigating toward an old, abandoned cabin in the rural foothills that David had owned in secret. Leo sat in the back next to Lily, who was wrapped in a heavy blanket, humming softly to herself, oblivious to the gravity of their midnight escape. Clara checked the rearview mirror every few seconds, watching for the telltale beams of pursuit vehicles, her hands gripping the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white.

They drove for over an hour, leaving the sprawling suburban developments behind for winding mountain roads flanked by towering pine trees. The air grew noticeably cooler, and a light mist began to settle over the windshield. Clara’s mind raced through every possible contingency. Vance would discover their departure within minutes of returning to the house, and the full weight of the academy’s security network would be mobilized to hunt them down. Their only chance was to reach out to Marcus Thorne, a disgraced former investigative journalist who had spent years trying to expose the academy’s dark practices before being silenced by threats and legal intimidation.

As they navigated a sharp hairpin turn, a pair of high-beam headlights flashed suddenly in the rearview mirror, closing the distance at an alarming speed. Evelyn gasped, pointing a trembling finger backward as a sleek black sedan materialized out of the fog directly behind them. Clara slammed her foot down on the gas pedal, the engine roaring in protest as the car surged forward along the treacherous mountain pass. The pursuit had begun in earnest, and the safety of the secluded cabin suddenly felt miles away. Clara had to push her driving skills to the absolute limit to keep her family safe from the predators closing in behind them.
