Chapter 6: The Morning After

Morning sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting sharp stripes across the kitchen floor where the remnants of Lily’s birthday party had finally been cleared away. Clara sat at the wooden table, nursing a cup of black coffee while reviewing the digital audio files on Leo’s tablet. Each recording confirmed the worst: Vance and his board operated like a predatory corporation, using manufactured psychological crises to seize custody of children from independent-minded mothers and reassign them to affluent, compliant donor families within their network. The sheer scale of the conspiracy was staggering, yet it explained the persistent dread that had haunted Clara for months.
Lily walked into the kitchen wearing a comfortable yellow sundress, her hair neatly tied back with a blue ribbon that masked the uneven cut from yesterday. She seemed to have put the trauma of the party behind her, greeting Clara with a bright, sleepy smile and asking for pancakes. Clara swallowed the lump in her throat, forcing a warm, reassuring smile as she pulled out a chair for her daughter. Evelyn stood by the stove, flipping pancakes with steady hands, acting as the domestic anchor they desperately needed. Normality was a fragile performance they were forced to enact while an invisible clock ticked down toward their inevitable confrontation with the board.
A sharp knock echoed at the front door, shattering the morning calm. Clara froze, her coffee mug hovering halfway to her mouth. Leo instantly slid the tablet beneath a stack of mail, his eyes locking onto the entryway. Evelyn wiped her hands on a kitchen towel and moved toward the hallway, her posture rigid. Through the frosted glass of the front door, the silhouette of a tall, imposing man was clearly visible. It was Arthur Vance himself, accompanied by two silent individuals in dark suits. The evaluation had officially begun, and they hadn't waited for Clara to report to them; they had come directly to her doorstep to collect their failing student.
