Chapter 8 - The Shattered Glass

The explosive impact shattered the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the executive boardroom into a million glittering shards that rained down across the polished mahogany table and plush carpets. The deafening blast wave knocked several police officers off their feet, sending a thick cloud of grey dust and acrid smoke billowing into the room.
"Get down! Down on the floor!" the lead police officer roared, drawing his weapon and dragging Julian toward the structural support pillars.
Valeria dropped instantly to her knees, pulling her beige trench coat tightly around her as flying debris pelted the walls above her. Richard and Arthur Vance scrambled behind the heavy oak conference table, shielding their heads with their arms. Clara screamed in blind panic, crawling frantically beneath a velvet sofa as smoke filled the room.
Through the gaping, jagged hole where the massive windows had just stood, the howling night wind whipped through the forty-second-floor suite, scattering papers and legal files like autumn leaves. Framed against the stormy Manhattan sky outside, the silhouette of a heavy-duty industrial drone hovered steadily just feet away from the ruined ledge, its high-intensity optical sensors pulsing with a sinister red light.
"It's a remote-controlled payload delivery," Marcus shouted over the screaming sirens and howling wind, clutching his bleeding forearm where a stray piece of glass had grazed his skin. "Someone just launched an EMP-laced explosive charge from the adjacent rooftop!"
Valeria rose slowly from the floor, brushing shattered glass from the fabric of her green dress. Her dark hair whipped wildly across her face in the gale-force wind. She refused to cower. She looked through the jagged window frame toward the neighboring skyscraper across the narrow urban canyon. There, on the opposing rooftop, a solitary figure dressed in dark clothing stood silhouetted against the flashing red lights of police helicopters converging on the scene.
The figure lowered a long-range encrypted transmitter, turned sharply, and vanished into the stairwell stairwell access door on the adjacent roof.
"Julian!" Valeria shouted, pushing past the smoke toward her handcuffed ex-husband. She grabbed him roughly by the lapel of his gray suit, hauling him to his feet. "Who is on that rooftop? Who else is part of your syndicate?"
Julian was trembling violently, his eyes wide with a terror that had nothing to do with the police handcuffs and everything to do with the drone hovering outside. "I... I don't know! I swear to God, I didn't know they would use explosives! We just wanted the files destroyed!"
"You didn't just want files destroyed, Julian," Arthur Vance said, stepping out from behind the table with a face carved from granite. Arthur pointed toward the central server rack embedded in the boardroom wall. The heavy steel door of the mainframe had been blown wide open by the directional blast, exposing smoking, fried circuit boards. "They weren't trying to blow up the room. They were trying to fry the core physical backup drives."
Marcus scrambled over to the smoking mainframe, frantically tapping the diagnostic screen of his laptop. His face drained of all color. "The physical drives are completely melted. The local data is gone."
Clara peeked out from beneath the sofa, a hysterical, breathless laugh escaping her lips. "You lost! You think you won with your legal documents, but the physical proof is vaporized! Without the mainframe logs, you can't prove Julian transferred a single dime!"
Valeria turned slowly toward Clara, her expression terrifyingly calm. She reached down, picked up her white handbag—miraculously undamaged amidst the destruction—and unzipped the main compartment. She pulled out a small, unassuming flash drive encased in brushed titanium.
"Julian was always so predictable," Valeria said softly, her voice carrying clearly over the howling wind. "He always insisted on creating a local physical mirror backup of every transaction, just in case his online servers went down. He gave me this exact drive three years ago as a 'failsafe' for our marriage."
Julian stared at the titanium drive in utter horror, the blood completely draining from his face. "No... I deleted that partition years ago."
"You forgot that I have a background in cybersecurity before I took over the family foundation," Valeria replied coldly. She tossed the titanium drive across the table to Arthur Vance. "Arthur, please hand this directly to the federal cybercrime division waiting in the lobby."
The lead police officer, recovering his footing and dusting off his uniform, grabbed Julian by the shoulder once more. "Mr. Cross, it looks like your list of charges just expanded to include domestic terrorism and property destruction. Let's move."
As the officers hauled Julian and a weeping Clara out of the ruined boardroom toward the emergency elevators, Valeria walked slowly to the edge of the shattered window, looking out over the glittering city below. The storm clouds were breaking, but as she looked down at the street far below, she noticed a sleek black motorcycle idling near the service entrance. Straddling the bike was a tall figure wearing a dark helmet, looking directly up at her window.
Marcus stepped up beside her, wrapping a white bandage around his arm. "Val, what do we do now? The board meeting is in eight hours. If we don't present the audited financials to the full board by morning, the bank will force an immediate receivership."
Valeria zipped her white handbag shut and turned away from the window, her dark eyes flashing with unyielding resolve.

"We don't wait for the morning board meeting, Marcus," Valeria said, her voice cutting through the chill wind. "We take the fight directly to their doorstep."
