Chapter 3 - The Blackout and the Breach

The sudden plunge into darkness paralyzed the executive boardroom for a fraction of a second. Outside the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, the Manhattan skyline flickered with neon signs, casting long, eerie shadows across the polished mahogany table. Richard reached out blindly, his hand grazing the edge of the glass where his white wine glass still sat untouched.

"Marcus, check the master breaker in the hallway," Richard commanded, his voice steady despite the abrupt disruption.

"I'm on it, Richard. Stay close," Marcus replied, the sound of his loafers shuffling against the carpet preceding the beam of a tactical flashlight slicing through the gloom. The bright LED beam illuminated Valeria standing calmly by the table, the screen of her tablet casting a harsh, blue glow across her composed features.

"It wasn't a random power outage," Valeria stated quietly, her fingers flying across the tablet's glass surface with practiced speed. "The building's smart-grid system was overridden from an internal terminal on the floor below us. Someone bypassed our security firewall the exact second I accessed Julian's offshore server."

Richard frowned, stepping closer to his daughter. "An inside job? Who besides Marcus and our immediate team has clearance for this floor?"

"Only the executive committee," Marcus called back from the doorway, his flashlight beam sweeping across the dark hallway outside. "And Julian was reinstated as acting managing partner of compliance yesterday afternoon by the board."

Valeria snapped the tablet shut with a sharp click. The silence in the room grew suffocating. Julian wasn't just playing a long game in court; he was actively hunting for the digital evidence she possessed. Every move they made was being anticipated, tracked, and countered in real-time.

Suddenly, a soft electronic chime echoed from the corner of the boardroom. It was the secure printer near the private filing cabinets. Without any manual command, the machine whirred to life, its internal rollers dragging paper through the feed with a rhythmic, mechanical scratching sound. A single sheet slid out into the output tray, illuminated only by a faint, blinking green LED light.

Richard strode across the room, tearing the paper from the tray. He held it up to the faint light leaking through the windows. His breath caught in his throat.

"Valeria, look at this," Richard whispered, handing the paper to his daughter.

Valeria scanned the text, and for the first time, her ironclad composure wavered. It was an automated notification from the federal securities commission, confirming that an emergency freeze had just been placed on all personal and corporate accounts belonging to Sterling & Vance. Worse still, a warrant for Richard’s immediate arrest had been issued under allegations of corporate embezzlement and securities fraud.

"They moved faster than we anticipated," Valeria said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Julian didn't just forge the transfer documents; he pre-filed the federal indictments with the backing of a corrupt federal magistrate."

"We need to get out of the building before the security detail arrives," Marcus urged, rushing back into the boardroom with panic etched across his face. "The lobby elevators are already locked down. Security guards in riot gear are taking control of the stairwells on floors forty and fifty."

Richard looked at his daughter, the weight of a lifetime’s work crumbling around him. "Val, if they arrest me tonight, the board will vote to liquidate the company by morning. Everything we built will be gone."

Valeria tightened the belt of her beige trench coat and slung the strap of her white handbag securely over her shoulder. Her dark eyes flashed with an unyielding, fierce determination. She refused to let her family's legacy be stolen by a venomous opportunist and an unfaithful ex-husband.

"They won't arrest anyone, Dad," Valeria said, stepping toward the private emergency staircase hidden behind the wood-paneled wall. "Because tonight, we are going to pay a very personal visit to Julian's penthouse apartment."

As Valeria punched the override code into the hidden keypad, the heavy steel door clicked open, revealing a dark, descending stairwell. But as they stepped inside, the stairwell door behind them slammed shut with a deafening crash, locking automatically from the outside and trapping them in absolute darkness.
