Chapter 7 - The Tables Turn

The heavy silence in the boardroom was absolute. Julian stood near the doorway, flanked by the city police officers, his chest puffed out with supreme confidence. Clara lingered just behind him, wearing a triumphant smirk as she pulled her luxurious fur coat tighter around her shoulders.

"Mr. Sterling, Mr. Vance," the lead police officer stepped forward, his hand resting casually on his holster. "We received an emergency dispatch and a signed warrant alleging corporate asset misappropriation and conspiracy to commit securities fraud from your acting managing partner, Mr. Julian Cross."

Richard stepped forward, his face flushed with righteous anger, but Arthur Vance raised a calm, arresting hand, motioning for Richard to hold his ground. Arthur slowly walked around the mahogany table, smoothing the front of his charcoal suit with deliberate, unhurried grace.

"An arrest warrant issued by whom, Officer?" Arthur asked, his voice calm, steady, and carrying the unmistakable weight of decades of corporate dominance.

The police officer blinked, pulling a folded document from his breast pocket. "From Magistrate Thomas in the Federal District Court. Requested directly by Mr. Cross."

Arthur let out a dry, humorless chuckle. He picked up the golden-sealed parchment from the table and held it out toward the officer. "Magistrate Thomas is a respected jurist, but he operates under the jurisdiction of state civil law. This document, however, supersedes federal civil injunctions under the federal maritime and international trade compacts established when Sterling & Vance was incorporated in Delaware forty years ago."

Julian’s confident smile faltered slightly. He stepped forward, his eyes darting nervously between Arthur and the police officer. "That's an archaic loophole, Vance. It doesn't apply to criminal investigations into embezzlement."

"Embezzlement requires stolen funds, Julian," Valeria spoke up for the first time, stepping out from the shadow of the conference table. She buttoned her beige trench coat and walked slowly toward her ex-husband, her dark eyes piercing straight through his facade. "Which is rather difficult to prove when the person accused of stealing the money never actually touched it."

Julian scoffed, regaining a measure of his bravado. "We have the bank transfer logs, Valeria. We have the digital paper trail leading straight from your father's personal accounts to your private offshore holdings."

"Do you?" Valeria tilted her head, a cold, knowing smile playing on her lips. She tapped the surface of the mahogany table with her fingernail. "Marcus, project the Zurich routing logs onto the main wall screen."

With a few quick keystrokes from his laptop, Marcus illuminated the massive projection screen behind the conference table. A complex network of digital nodes and financial data flowed across the board, culminating in a bright red confirmation box.

"Those transfer logs were routed through a secondary proxy server," Marcus explained clearly, his voice echoing in the quiet room. "Every single dollar that appeared to go into Valeria's account was actually mirrored and redirected into a dormant shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands."

Clara’s smirk vanished instantly. She grabbed Julian’s arm, her voice dropping to a panicky whisper. "Julian... what are they talking about? Whose shell corporation is that?"

Julian’s face turned an ugly shade of pale grey. He stared at the screen, recognizing the alphanumeric registration code of the Cayman Island entity. It was the exact shell corporation he had set up in secret two years ago to siphon funds away from both his marriage to Valeria and his partnership at Sterling & Vance.

"That's... that's a fabrication! They hacked the system and doctored the files!" Julian stammered, his voice cracking slightly as he pointed a trembling finger at Valeria.

"Not doctored, Julian. Confirmed," Arthur Vance stated coldly, stepping directly into Julian's personal space. Arthur reached into his leather briefcase and pulled out a second document—a certified banking affidavit bearing the official stamp of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission. "This affidavit proves that three hours ago, an automated wire transfer of four point two million dollars was initiated from Julian Cross's personal Cayman holdings into an undisclosed cryptocurrency wallet."

The police officer frowned, turning his stern gaze from Arthur to Julian. "Mr. Cross, did you execute a wire transfer from an offshore account during an active corporate audit?"

Julian swallowed hard, sweat beading visibly on his forehead. "I... I was acting in the best interest of the firm to secure company assets!"

"By transferring them into a private crypto wallet registered under an alias?" Valeria asked smoothly, stepping closer. She reached into her white handbag, pulled out a printed transcript of the audio recording she had captured in the parking garage, and handed it directly to the police officer. "And here is a verbatim audio transcript of Mr. Cross conspiring with his accomplice to frame my father and liquidate the company assets by tomorrow noon."

The officer scanned the transcript, his expression hardening into absolute disgust. He snapped his head up and looked directly at his squad.

"Julian Cross, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy," the officer commanded, stepping forward and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Julian's wrists with a sharp, echoing snap.

As Julian was shoved backward toward the doorway, struggling and shouting protests, Clara tried to quietly slip past the officers toward the elevators.

"Hold on, Miss Vance—or should I say, Miss Reynolds," Valeria called out sharply, freezing Clara in her tracks. Valeria pulled a folded photograph from her white handbag and held it up for everyone to see. "I think you should explain to the authorities why your signature appears as the primary beneficiary on Julian's Cayman shell corporation."

Clara slowly turned around, her face twisted in pure, venomous hatred. But before she could utter a single word, the heavy glass doors of the executive suite shattered inward in an explosion of flying shards and blinding white light.
