Chapter 9 - The Federal Warrant

The sharp click of the phone line going dead echoed loudly in the silent penthouse office. Julian slowly lowered his hand, his fingers tightening around the device until his knuckles turned white. He looked at Eleanor and Marcus, who stood frozen like statues caught in the crosshairs of an inescapable reality.

“The FBI is on their way,” Julian said, his voice eerily calm compared to the rising panic in the room. “They have a search warrant for the estate and this office.”

Eleanor’s hands began to tremble uncontrollably. She grabbed her designer handbag from the chair, her professional armor completely stripped away, leaving only a desperate, cornered woman. “We have to leave. Now. My private helicopter is waiting on the roof pad. We can reach the Canadian border before the feds secure airspace.”

“And leave everything behind?” Marcus scoffed bitterly, wiping sweat from his forehead with a silk handkerchief. “The authorities already frozen our passports, Eleanor. There is no escaping this. The moment we step onto that roof, federal agents will intercept us.”

Julian walked past them toward the corner sofa where Lily was sitting, clutching her grey shawl tightly around her small frame. He knelt down beside her, his expression softening with profound remorse.

“Lily, you’re going to be safe,” Julian promised, resting a gentle hand on her shoulder. “I’m going to make sure of that.”

“Are they going to take you away too?” Lily asked, her voice cracking with unshed tears.

“No. I have to stay and fix what should have been fixed twenty years ago,” Julian said firmly.

Before Lily could reply, heavy, coordinated footsteps echoed from the private elevator corridor outside the office. The reinforced glass double doors rattled as multiple federal agents in tactical gear took up positions outside, their dark uniforms and heavy equipment visible through the frosted panes.

Eleanor backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, her chest heaving as she stared at the approaching threat. “This is the end, Julian. You’re destroying everything we spent a lifetime building over a dead woman and a stranger.”

“We built it on a foundation of lies and stolen lives, Eleanor,” Julian replied, standing up to face the entrance. “It was never real.”

The heavy glass doors swung open with a resounding thud. A tall, formidable federal agent with sharp features and cold grey eyes stepped into the office, flanked by four armed officers.

“Julian Sterling?” the lead agent asked, stepping forward with a leather folder in hand.

“I am Julian Sterling,” Julian answered steadily, stepping away from Lily as the federal agent raised his hand to read the formal charges.
