Chapter 5 - Water and Ink

The freezing water poured from the ceiling vents, turning the dusty basement floor into a slick mire of mud and debris. Julian shielded the yellowed letter with his body, frantically trying to press the wet paper against his chest to save the fading ink, but it was already too late. Caroline’s handwriting dissolved into dark, blurry smudges before his eyes.

“No, no, no,” Julian muttered, desperately tracing the blurred lines with his thumb, hoping against hope that some fragment of the confession would remain legible.

Lily sobbed softly beside him, pulling her grey shawl tighter around her shivering shoulders as the icy water soaked through her clothes. “It’s ruined! Everything mom left me is gone!”

“It’s okay, Lily. We’ll find another way,” Julian said, though his own voice sounded hollow and defeated. He stood up, clutching the ruined envelope in one hand and the scorched diary in the other.

The emergency backup generator kicked in with a dull roar, and the harsh fluorescent lights flickered back on. At the same moment, the heavy iron door began to slowly grind open. A figure stood in the doorway, framed by the bright light of the hallway. It wasn't Eleanor.

It was Marcus Vance, Julian’s oldest friend and the managing partner of Sterling-Vance Enterprises, dressed impeccably in his custom tuxedo, holding a heavy wrench used to override the door mechanism.

“Julian! Thank God,” Marcus exclaimed, rushing down the steps despite the pooling water. He took in the chaotic scene—the weeping child, the soaked floor, and Julian’s pale, furious expression. “Eleanor called me upstairs. She said you had a medical episode down here with a vagrant child. Are you out of your mind?”

Julian stared at his lifelong friend, noticing for the first time the slight twitch in Marcus’s left eye and the way his tailored cuffs remained completely dry, despite walking through the flooded hallway.

“You came down here awfully fast, Marcus,” Julian said, his voice dangerously calm. “And you managed to open a military-grade security lock in under two minutes.”

Marcus’s polite smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he smoothed his expression back into one of bewildered concern. “I was in the security office when Eleanor called, Julian. I pulled the manual bypass lever. What is happening here? Who is this girl?”

Julian stepped forward, placing himself protectively between Marcus and Lily. “This is Caroline’s daughter, Marcus. And you knew Caroline was pregnant, didn't you?”

Marcus went completely rigid, his eyes darting past Julian to look directly at the young girl cowering behind him.
