Chapter 12 - A Father's Confession

The visiting room at the federal detention center smelled of industrial disinfectant and stale coffee. Julian sat at the bolted-down table, wearing a standard orange jumpsuit, his silver hair uncombed and his face lined with the deep exhaustion of a man who had finally stopped running from his past.

The heavy steel door swung open, and Lily walked in, accompanied by her court-appointed guardian. She was wearing the same simple blue dress, and the sapphire ring was safely secured on a silver chain around her neck.

Julian stood up immediately, his hands cuffed in front of him, a gentle, bittersweet smile breaking across his weary face. “Lily.”

The young girl ran across the room and threw her arms around his waist, burying her face in his chest. Julian wrapped his arms around her as best he could, closing his eyes as a single tear escaped down his cheek.

“Are you okay?” Lily asked softly, looking up into his eyes.

“I’m better than I deserve to be,” Julian said, kneeling down so they were eye to eye. He gestured for her to sit across from him at the table. “Did you see the news this morning?”

Lily nodded slowly. “The social worker told me I own the big building now.”

“You do,” Julian said softly. “And more importantly, you own your name. Your mother’s name has been cleared of all those terrible lies. The federal court officially restored her honor today.”

Lily’s eyes welled with tears of relief, a bright, beautiful smile finally illuminating her face. “Mom would have been so happy.”

“She would have been proud of you,” Julian added, his voice thick with emotion. “You were braver than I ever was.”

The guardian stepped forward, checking her wristwatch gently. “Mr. Sterling, visiting time is almost over.”

Julian nodded, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, worn leather-bound notebook—the only personal item allowed to remain with him. He slid it across the table toward Lily.

“What is this?” Lily asked, touching the cover.

“It’s my journal from the year you were born,” Julian explained. “It has stories about your mother, recipes from the old estate kitchen, and everything I wish I could have shared with you while you were growing up. Read it whenever you miss her.”

Lily clutched the notebook tightly to her chest. “Will I get to see you again soon?”

Before Julian could answer, the metal door clicked open, and Agent Vance stepped into the room with a solemn expression on his face.

“Mr. Sterling,” the agent said quietly. “You need to come with me. There’s been a major development regarding Eleanor and Marcus.”
