Chapter 6 - The Partner's Secret

The heavy silence in the basement grew oppressive, broken only by the steady drip of water from the overhead pipes. Marcus Vance swallowed hard, his posture stiffening as he avoided Julian’s piercing gaze.

“Caroline was an employee, Julian. Nothing more,” Marcus said carefully, his voice dropping into a measured, corporate cadence. “We all mourned her passing in the fire. But bringing some random street child into this corporate mess is professional suicide. The board is meeting in the morning to finalize the Asian market acquisition. If word gets out that you're chasing ghost stories, they will strip you of your chairmanship.”

Julian didn't blink. He kept his eyes locked on his oldest friend, remembering decades of shared decisions, silent understandings, and hidden ledgers. “You helped Eleanor pay her off, didn't you, Marcus? You handled the corporate accounts back then. You transferred the hush money from the foundation’s development fund.”

Marcus let out a short, humorless breath, shaking his head slowly. “You are projecting your own guilt onto me because you couldn't keep your hands to yourself twenty years ago. Caroline chose to leave. She took the settlement and vanished. The fire was an accident investigated by the state police. Case closed.”

“The file was purged!” Julian shouted, the anger finally breaking through his restrained exterior. “The staff logs are gone, and Eleanor locked us in here to let us freeze!”

“Eleanor panicked because a lunatic child crashed our biggest gala with a stolen ring!” Marcus snapped back, his mask of cordiality finally slipping to reveal a flash of cold, calculating hostility. “She is your wife, Julian. She protected your reputation for thirty years. And this is how you repay her? By believing a fairy tale?”

Lily shrank back against the concrete wall, terrified by the escalating shouting match. She reached out and grabbed the hem of Julian’s soaked suit jacket. “Please, Mr. Sterling. Let’s get out of here. He looks like the man who came to our cabin last winter.”

Julian froze. He looked down at the girl, then snapped his gaze back to Marcus. “What did you just say, Lily?”

Before Lily could answer, Marcus lunged forward with terrifying speed, his hand shooting out to grab the scorched diary from Julian’s grip. But Julian anticipated the move, sidestepping sharply and shoving Marcus back against the rusted boiler.

“You’ve been watching them,” Julian accused, his voice shaking with fury. “You knew where they were living all these years.”

Marcus straightened his tuxedo jacket, dusting off imaginary lint with chilling composure. He didn't deny it. Instead, a slow, cold smile crept across his face.

“Of course I knew, Julian,” Marcus said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. “Someone had to make sure the secret stayed buried. And now that you’ve dug it up, you’ve put us all in grave danger.”
