Chapter 7: The Master of the Gorge

By late summer, the White Salmon River Joinery had become the center of a regional renaissance in sustainable timber construction.
The Wasco County commissioners awarded Silas and Lucas the landmark contract to restore *The Lost Valley Covered Bridge*—a 120-foot historical timber span over the Deschutes River that had been closed to regional farm traffic for twenty years due to decayed chords.
Lucas served as the project’s chief structural engineer and master joiner.
He spent weeks drafting the replacement Queen-post truss systems, using 60-foot hand-hewn Douglas fir timbers harvested through sustainable forest thinning from the Mount Hood conservation reserve.
Working alongside him was Clara Evans, a thirty-one-year-old civil hydrologist and river restoration engineer whose family operated a salmon conservation hatchery along the river.
Clara had clear hazel eyes, dark wavy hair pulled into a practical braid, and a brilliant, grounded intellect that matched Lucas’s architectural precision. She wore canvas work trousers, leather boots, and a denim work shirt, moving through the river staging sites with confident, unhurried authority.
One sunny afternoon, as they were inspecting the timber abutments above the rushing white water, Clara watched Lucas check the tolerance of a ten-inch mortise joint with a wooden gauge.
""Most corporate contractors would have installed prefabricated steel trusses and sprayed concrete over these piers, Lucas,"" Clara said, leaning against the timber staging. ""It would have taken three weeks and doubled their profit margin.""
Lucas looked up, wiping fir sawdust from his brow with his forearm, his eyes clear and peaceful.
""Steel rusts in forty years when the river mist hits the joints, Clara,"" Lucas replied gently. ""Heart-fir, if it's framed true and covered by cedar shingles, will breathe with the seasons and carry our grandchildren's wagons a hundred years from now.""
Clara looked at him, her lips curving into a warm, luminous smile that sent a sudden, profound heat through Lucas’s chest.
""You build for the long horizon, Lucas,"" Clara said softly.
May you like
""There is no other way to build, Clara,"" Lucas smiled back.
