Chapter 1: The Speaker on the Porch

The rain over Portland, Oregon, was a soft, steady veil that darkened the cedar shingles of the craftsman bungalow on Elmwood Avenue.
On the front porch, standing between two grey planters of budding lavender, Kyle Miller smiled directly into the sleek black lens of the smart video doorbell mounted on the fluted white column. He wore an olive-green overshirt over a crisp white t-shirt, his hair styled with confident ease. In his right hand, he held the telescoping handle of a navy-blue rolling suitcase; on his shoulder rested a matching travel duffle.
Behind him on the wet pavement, a twenty-foot white commercial moving truck idled, its diesel exhaust curling into the cool morning air.
Following him up the concrete walkway was his partner, Megan. She wore a tailored camel-colored wool coat over an ivory knit sweater, carrying an overnight bag. Her brunette bob was neatly styled, but her eyes darted between the dark, locked front door and the quiet neighborhood with subtle, mounting unease.
Kyle raised his hand and waved cheerfully at the camera’s glowing blue LED ring.
Two miles away, inside the warm, wood-paneled interior of the Pearl District Coffeehouse, Lucas Vance sat at a round oak table. His open laptop displayed a live, high-definition split-screen feed from his home security system alongside architectural CAD layouts for a community library.
Lucas picked up his smartphone, pressed the talk icon, and spoke into the microphone. His voice was not raised in theatrical anger; it carried the calm, immovable finality of an iron bolt sliding into place.
""Kyle, I told you no. You need to leave.""
The speaker on the porch emitted the words with crystalline, digital clarity.
Kyle froze. The charming, entitled grin on his face vanished, replaced by an expression of sharp, disbelieving irritation. He took a step closer to the lens, tapping the brass door lock as if expecting the deadbolt to disengage on command.
Megan stopped dead on the top step. She set her bag down onto the damp floorboards, her arms folding tightly across her chest. The rain dripped from the porch eaves into the flowerbeds with a rhythmic, hollow patter.
She looked at Kyle’s tense, hunched shoulders, her eyes narrowing as the foundation of his assurances cracked wide open.

""Kyle,"" Megan said, her voice dropping into a cold, lethal register of clarity. ""Did he ever actually say we could live here?""
