Chapter 10: The Dedication of the Span

Three months later, on a freezing, brilliant Saturday morning in late January, five hundred citizens from across Wasco and Hood River counties gathered on the banks of the Deschutes River.

Resting over the rushing white water was *The Lost Valley Covered Bridge*.

Its 120-foot Douglas fir framework gleamed beneath five coats of natural marine oil; its cedar roof was dusted with a thin layer of clean snow; its hand-carved mortise joints locked together with mathematical and artistic perfection.

The county judge stood at the timber portal beside Clara Evans and Silas Thorne, holding a pair of bronze ceremonial shears.

Lucas stood at the center of the span, dressed in a tailored wool coat and work boots, his posture upright and joyful.

The judge stepped to the microphone, his voice echoing across the frozen river.

""For twenty years, commercial civil firms told us this crossing was impossible to save without five million dollars of imported steel,"" the judge spoke to the crowd. ""They told us traditional wood was a relic of the past. But the master craftspeople of the White Salmon River Joinery proved that when a community honors the truth, our own forests and our own honest hands can build spans that will carry our children’s children into the next century.""

The judge handed the bronze shears to Lucas and Clara.

Together, their hands joined over the wooden handles, Lucas and Clara cut the green ribbon with a clean, triumphant *snip*.

""The crossing is open, neighbors!"" Lucas announced, his voice ringing strong and clear across the water. ""Walk together!""

The crowd erupted into thunderous, standing cheers as vintage farm wagons, local families, and laughing children ran across the heavy fir decking, their footsteps drumming against the wood like a chorus of unshakeable hope.
