Chapter 5 - The Dawn Ultimatum

The blinding beam of headlights cut through the misty autumn dawn, casting long, skeletal shadows across the polished hardwood floors of the mansion’s grand study. Julian stumbled backward from the desk, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird, while Clara froze by the window, her breath hitching in her throat as she stared down at the driveway.
A sleek black luxury car idled quietly by the stone steps. The uniformed driver stepped out, holding a black umbrella, and smoothly opened the rear passenger door. But it wasn’t Eleanor who emerged from the vehicle.
Instead, a tall, imposing man in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit stepped into the cool morning air. He clutched a heavy leather briefcase against his chest with absolute precision, his face carved from unyielding granite.
“Who is that?” Clara whispered, her voice tightening with a sudden, sharp spike of paranoia. “Is that the police? Did your mother call the authorities?”
Julian shook his head, pressing his palms against his temples as the initial shock slowly gave way to a sickening wave of dread.
“No,” Julian breathed, recognizing the silhouette instantly. “That’s Arthur Vance. My mother’s chief corporate liquidator. If he’s here at sunrise, it means nothing is left.”
Before Julian could move toward the heavy oak doors, the loud, resonant chime of the front doorbell echoed through the cavernous hallway. It wasn’t a polite ring; it was a commanding, rhythmic summons that demanded immediate compliance.
Clara grabbed Julian’s arm with claws sharp enough to pierce the fabric of his light blue shirt.
“Don’t answer it!” Clara hissed, her face pale beneath her heavy makeup. “If we don’t open the door, they can’t serve us anything. We are legally residing here! You signed the preliminary transfer papers, Julian!”
“The preliminary papers mean nothing without the master seal, Clara!” Julian yelled back, finally snapping under the crushing weight of his own monumental stupidity. He shoved her hand away. “You pushed me into this! You wanted the throne without earning the crown, and now the bill has finally arrived!”
Without waiting for her retort, Julian marched down the long hallway, his boots echoing sharply against the marble floor. He unlocked the heavy oak door and pulled it open.
Arthur Vance stood on the threshold, completely dry beneath his black umbrella despite the damp morning mist. He did not smile. He did not offer a polite greeting. He simply reached into his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of official legal documents stamped with a gleaming gold seal, and extended them toward Julian.
“Good morning, Mr. Vance,” Julian said, his voice cracking with humiliation. “My mother sent you to deliver a warning?”
“Not a warning, Julian. An eviction,” Arthur replied, his voice flat, professional, and devoid of any human warmth. “By direct order of Eleanor Vance, sole majority shareholder and founder of Vance Global, all residential privileges, corporate allowances, credit lines, and secondary properties associated with your name are hereby revoked, effective immediately.”
Arthur stepped past Julian without waiting for an invitation, his heavy leather shoes clicking against the foyer floor as he walked straight into the study where Clara stood trembling in her pink satin dress.
Arthur placed the thick stack of papers squarely in the center of the mahogany desk, right beside the shattered pieces of the champagne flute.
“You have exactly two hours to pack your personal belongings,” Arthur announced, scanning the lavish room with cold indifference. “The marshals will arrive at eight o’clock to change the locks and inventory all assets purchased with company funds. That includes the car in the garage, the clothes on your backs, and every single piece of jewelry in this room.”
Clara let out a sharp, breathless shriek of pure rage, lunging forward to grab the documents.
“You can’t do this!” Clara screamed, her mask completely shattered. “I am pregnant! I have rights! This is a violation of—”

Before she could finish her sentence, Arthur raised a single finger, silencing her instantly as his phone buzzed with an incoming encrypted video call from Eleanor herself.
