Chapter 10 - The New Heir’s Shadow

The cold autumn wind whipped down the empty highway, biting fiercely through the thin fabric of Julian’s shirt as he stood stranded outside the towering iron gates of the estate. He stared down at his cheap burner phone, the glowing screen illuminating his pale, sweat-slicked face. The photograph of his mother—Eleanor—standing beside a sharp, impeccably dressed young man holding her silver suitcase burned into his retinas.
“The new heir has arrived.”
Julian’s fingers trembled so violently he almost dropped the phone onto the wet concrete. He tried dialing the number back, but a pre-recorded automated voice instantly greeted him with a chilling, robotic tone: “This subscriber is no longer accepting incoming calls from this device.”
“No… no, wait!” Julian shouted desperately into the empty air, his voice cracking with sheer panic. “That’s impossible! I am her flesh and blood! Who is he?!”
There was no answer. Only the distant, mocking roar of a semi-truck passing on the interstate miles away.
Inside the penthouse suite fifty floors above the gleaming city streets, Eleanor Vance stood beside the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, watching the distant security feeds of the estate gates on a massive curved monitor. Beside her stood Marcus Vance—not just her driver and security chief, but her legally adopted nephew and newly appointed corporate successor, a brilliant Harvard-trained M&A attorney who had spent the last five years quietly auditing global markets under a pseudonym.
Marcus adjusted his tie, his expression calm and unreadable as he watched Julian shrink into a pathetic, shivering dot on the camera monitor.
“The property is fully secured, Aunt Eleanor,” Marcus said smoothly, his voice rich and steady. “The local authorities have transferred Clara to holding, and her co-conspirators in the financial sector are currently being served with federal indictments. The estate is officially clear.”
Eleanor took a slow sip of her black coffee, her eyes never leaving the screen where her biological son sat crying on the curb.
“Good,” Eleanor replied, her voice as cold and hard as polished granite. “Julian wanted to trade his family name for a parasitic con artist. Now he can experience what the real world offers without a safety net, a trust fund, or a mother to clean up his messes.”
Marcus glanced at the tablet screen, a flicker of complex emotion crossing his sharp features.
“He’s your only biological child, Eleanor. Do you truly intend to cut him off entirely?” Marcus asked, not out of sympathy for Julian, but from a purely analytical standpoint.
Eleanor turned away from the window, her gaze locking onto Marcus with an intensity that commanded absolute obedience.
“Blood makes you related, Marcus. Loyalty makes you family,” Eleanor stated firmly. “Julian made his choice when he slammed the oak door in my face and handed my life’s work over to a criminal. You earned your place through decades of discipline, intellect, and unwavering integrity. The empire goes to those who build it, not those who inherit it to fund their own decadence.”
Marcus gave a respectful nod, accepting the profound weight of the responsibility she had just placed upon his shoulders.
“Then I will finalize the global conglomerate restructuring papers this afternoon,” Marcus replied. “Shall I instruct legal to block any further financial appeals from his legal team?”
“Block them permanently,” Eleanor commanded. “And prepare the press release for tomorrow morning’s financial gazette. The market needs to know that Vance Global has a new visionary at the helm.”
Back down on the freezing sidewalk, Julian finally staggered to his feet, clutching his cheap canvas duffel bag to his chest like a shield against the cruel world. He had no money, no credit cards, no car, and nowhere to go. The penthouse down payment was gone, the mansion was locked, and his fake fiancée was sitting in a county holding cell.
He started walking aimlessly down the shoulder of the highway, his expensive leather dress shoes—now scuffed and ruined by the damp gravel—blistering his feet with every painful step.
After walking for nearly an hour, he reached a run-down gas station on the outskirts of the city. He stumbled inside, desperate to find a working payphone or scrape together enough loose change for a cheap cup of coffee to thaw his freezing hands.
As he stepped up to the counter, the tiny television mounted near the ceiling flickered from a local news broadcast to a breaking financial bulletin.
The news anchor’s cheerful, polished voice echoed loudly through the dingy convenience store.
“Breaking financial news this morning: Vance Global Holdings has officially announced a massive executive restructuring. Founder Eleanor Vance has stepped down as active CEO, naming her newly appointed successor, Marcus Vance, as the sole heir to the multi-billion-dollar empire. Industry analysts are calling it the most strategic—and ruthless—leadership transition of the decade...”
Julian froze, staring up at the television screen in absolute, paralyzing horror.
The screen flashed a crisp, high-definition photograph of Marcus standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Eleanor, both of them wearing matching charcoal designer suits, smiling with absolute, untouchable confidence.

And right beside Marcus, resting securely on a velvet pedestal, was the silver suitcase.
