Chapter 4 - The Shadow of a Past Life

The soft chime of the tablet notification broke the heavy silence of the fifty-fourth-floor office. Eleanor turned away from the sprawling city view, her sharp gaze fixing on Marcus, who held out a slim dossier bound in matte black leather. The faint golden embossing on the cover bore the crest of a high-end private investigative agency known for uncovering secrets that wealthy elites would kill to keep buried.
“What is this?” Eleanor asked, her voice carrying a dangerous, low timbre.
“That, Madam, is the comprehensive background file on our dear, expecting guest, Clara,” Marcus replied, flipping open the first page to reveal a series of high-resolution photographs and financial transaction records. “It appears her pregnancy in that pink satin dress is not the only theatrical performance she has mastered over the years.”
Eleanor stepped closer, her eyes scanning the documents. The pages detailed a sordid trail of broken engagements, falsified medical records, and clever financial extortions spanning three different states. Clara was not a naive young woman swept off her feet by a wealthy heir; she was a calculated professional con artist who specialized in trapping vulnerable, weak-willed men with substantial family fortunes.
A cold, mirthless smile touched the corners of Eleanor’s lips.
“My foolish son actually believed he found true love while drowning in his own inadequacy,” Eleanor remarked, tracing a finger over a photograph of Clara standing outside a luxury hotel in Monaco years prior. “He traded a mother who built an empire for a cheap actress playing a role.”
“There is more,” Marcus continued, turning another page. “The apartment where Julian met her—the penthouse down payment he used my company’s emergency funds to secure—it isn’t even in his name. It was transferred to a shell company controlled entirely by Clara’s previous husband, a man currently serving time for securities fraud.”
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure ice. The betrayal was no longer just a personal slight against her motherhood; it was a direct, calculated assault on the corporate fortress she had spent decades constructing.
Back at the mansion, the atmosphere was thick with suffocating panic. The shattered glass of the champagne flute lay forgotten on the study floor as Clara paced back and forth, her pink satin dress swishing angrily around her ankles.
“You idiot!” Clara screamed, her voice losing its fabricated melody and dropping into a harsh, shrill screech. “You told me your mother was losing her grip! You told me she would never suspect a thing!”
Julian slumped over the desk, his head buried in his hands as he stared blankly at the locked laptop screen. The error message mocked him in glowing red letters.
“She must have set a trap,” Julian muttered, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and disbelief. “She knew. She knew all along and she just watched me walk right into it.”
“I don’t care about your mother’s mind games!” Clara snapped, marching over and grabbing Julian by the collar of his light blue shirt, yanking him upward. “Fix this! Call her! Beg her! If we don’t have access to those funds by sunrise, the creditors will strip every single luxury out from under us, and I am not going down as the wife of a penniless nobody!”
Julian stared into Clara’s distorted, furious face, finally seeing the ugly, grasping reality of the woman he had chosen over his own flesh and blood. The glamour was gone, replaced by the desperate desperation of a parasite whose host had suddenly turned toxic.
“I can’t call her,” Julian whispered, his voice hollow. “She blocked my number the second the door closed.”
Clara shoved him away in disgust, turning toward the window as a pair of blinding headlights swept across the front lawn, painting long, distorted shadows across the grand room.
