Chapter 8: The Quiet Aftermath

The grand ballroom felt strangely cavernous now that the source of deception had been removed. The music had stopped entirely, and the remaining guests had drifted toward the exits, whispering among themselves about the aborted wedding and the sudden departure of the bride. The crystal chandelier continued to cast its brilliant light, but the brilliance felt sterile, illuminating an empty floor of polished marble and discarded champagne flutes.
Arthur stood near the mahogany pillar where Julian had been standing hours earlier, staring down at the polished floor with a dazed expression. The adrenaline that had fueled his confrontation with Claire had evaporated, leaving behind a profound exhaustion. He rubbed his temples with thumb and forefinger, feeling the weight of months of manipulation finally lifting from his shoulders.
Julian walked over, closing the dark leather portfolio and setting it down on a nearby cocktail table with a dull thud. "You handled that with remarkable composure, Arthur. It could have gone much worse."
"Worse?" Arthur let out a dry, mirthless chuckle. "I was forty-eight hours away from handing over my father's legacy to a professional fraud artist. I feel like a fool, Julian. How did I miss every single red flag?"
"Because you wanted to believe in a fresh start," Evelyn said softly as she joined them, her arm resting gently on her son’s shoulder. "Hope makes us vulnerable, Arthur. There is no shame in wanting happiness after what you went through with your divorce. The important thing is that the truth came to light before the damage became permanent."
Julian looked around the empty room, searching for a specific flash of red velvet and white tights. "Where did she go?" he asked abruptly.
Evelyn blinked, turning her head to scan the perimeter of the ballroom. "She was right behind us when we left the service corridor. I assumed she followed us back into the hall."
Arthur straightened up, a sudden surge of curiosity cutting through his fatigue. "The girl. We never even asked her name. We don't even know how she got into the secure wing of the estate tonight with all the security checkpoints active."

Julian strode quickly toward the main archway that led to the long hallway where their journey had begun. The corridor was quiet and dimly lit, the portraits staring down from the walls with unseeing eyes. They walked rapidly to the end of the hall, stopping before the dark wooden double doors that led to Evelyn’s private study.
The heavy doors stood slightly ajar. Julian pushed them open completely, stepping into the room with Arthur and Evelyn close behind.
