Chapter 4: Shadows in the Library

The mahogany-paneled library smelled of old paper, leather bindings, and faint traces of cedarwood. It was a sanctuary of quiet reflection during ordinary parties, but tonight it served as neutral ground for an impending confrontation. Julian stood by the dormant fireplace, the dark leather portfolio resting securely beneath his arm. Evelyn paced slowly near the tall windows overlooking the moonlit garden, while the young girl sat quietly on a low velvet bench near the door, her hands folded neatly in her lap over her white tights.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Arthur stepped inside. Tall, broad-shouldered, and impeccably dressed in a tuxedo that matched Julian’s, he looked flushed from dancing and champagne. A broad, easy smile graced his clean-shaven face, though it quickly faded as he registered the tense atmosphere in the room.

"What is this about, Mother? Julian?" Arthur asked, closing the door behind him with a slight snap. "The string quartet is playing our song, and Claire is wondering where I disappeared to. You look as though you've just sentenced someone to the gallows."

"In a manner of speaking, we have," Julian said evenly, stepping away from the fireplace and placing the dark portfolio squarely in the center of the mahogany conference table. He did not raise his voice; restrained emotion made his words carry far more weight than any outburst could have managed.

Arthur’s smile vanished completely, replaced by a defensive scowl. He crossed his arms over his chest, his dark slicked-back hair catching the amber light of the desk lamp. "What kind of game are you playing, Julian? If this is some bizarre bachelor party prank, it's in terrible taste. Claire has had a difficult past, yes, but we've put all of that behind us. We talked about her previous marriage—she was the victim of an abusive situation."

"Her previous marriage ended because her husband caught her looting his corporate accounts under an assumed identity, Arthur," Evelyn interjected, her voice trembling slightly as she stepped forward from the window. "And that was just the beginning. Open the folder."

Arthur glared at the leather binding as if it were a venomous creature. "I will not dignify this paranoia with an inspection. You never liked her, Mother. You've been looking for flaws since the day we met."

The young girl in the red velvet dress stood up from the velvet bench. She walked across the Persian rug, her red shoes making no sound on the thick wool, and stopped right in front of Arthur. She looked up at him with unblinking earnestness.

"Trust is a glass bridge," she said softly. "Once it cracks, walking across it with your eyes closed doesn't make the chasm disappear."

Arthur stared down at the child, momentarily disarmed by her directness and poise. The sheer anomaly of her presence in a private family crisis cut through his stubborn defensiveness. Slowly, reluctantly, Arthur lowered his arms, stepped toward the table, and reached out a hand to flip open the dark leather folder.
