Chapter 11: The Family Gathering

Three days after the aborted wedding, Evelyn’s private estate was bathed in the quiet, golden light of a Sunday afternoon. The tension that had gripped the household during the weekend had given way to an atmosphere of profound relief and quiet reflection. Evelyn sat in the sunroom, pouring Earl Grey tea from a silver pot into delicate porcelain cups, while Arthur stood by the French doors looking out over the rose garden.

Julian entered the sunroom carrying a small leather-bound notebook containing the updated corporate security protocols. He set it gently on the glass-topped table before taking a seat opposite Evelyn.

"The board approved the new compliance measures unanimously this morning," Julian announced, accepting a cup of tea from Evelyn with a nod of gratitude. "No major financial transaction can be authorized without dual-partner verification and cryptographic signature tracking. We've effectively closed every loophole Claire tried to exploit."

"It’s a heavy price to pay for a hard lesson, but necessary," Evelyn murmured, stirring a small cube of sugar into her tea. She looked around the sunroom, her gaze lingering on the empty velvet armchair in the corner. "Do you think we'll ever know who she was? The little girl in the red dress?"

Arthur turned away from the French doors and walked over to join them, taking a seat beside his mother. "I've checked with every guest list, every catering staff agency, and every security log from that night. No child matching that description—long light brown hair in a half-up ponytail, red velvet dress, white tights, and red shoes—was registered as a guest or employed by any vendor at the party."

Julian sipped his tea, feeling the warmth spread through him. "Sometimes people appear precisely when they are needed most, and vanish once their work is done. Searching for ordinary explanations for extraordinary moments might only diminish what happened."

Evelyn smiled softly, a look of serene acceptance washing over her features. "You sound like her, Julian. 'Secrets heavy like stones sink boats.' I can still hear her voice echoing in the hallway."

"She had a remarkable way of speaking," Arthur admitted, resting his arms on the table. "Direct, honest, and completely devoid of pretense. I realized something standing in that library with the portfolio in my hands: I was so afraid of being alone after my divorce that I let someone into my life who told me everything I wanted to hear, rather than what I needed to know."

"That awareness is worth more than all the assets we saved," Julian said firmly. "It ensures you won't make the same mistake twice."
