Chapter 7: The Unraveling in Public

Claire assessed the tableau before her with razor-sharp intelligence. She saw Julian’s unyielding stance, Evelyn’s resolute jaw, Arthur’s hardened expression, and the small, unwavering presence of the girl in the red velvet dress. She realized instantly that charm and feigned ignorance would no longer suffice.

"You're making a terrible mistake," Claire said, her voice dropping its musical lilt and hardening into a sharp, clinical edge. She stepped closer to Arthur, lowering her tone so only the immediate group could hear. "If you make a scene here, Arthur, my legal team will tear your logistics firm apart before the market opens on Monday. You signed those transfer documents willingly—or at least, your signature is on file with the state registry."

"My signature was forged while I was recovering from surgery, and we have the digital forensics and banking logs to prove it," Arthur replied without blinking. He did not raise his voice; his restraint was far more terrifying than any shouting match.

Julian unlatched the brass clasps of the dark portfolio and lifted the cover just enough for Claire to see the official letterhead of the federal prosecutor's office resting on top. The color drained from her cheeks instantly. The ivory silk gown suddenly seemed too heavy, her carefully constructed identity dissolving under the harsh light of undeniable evidence.

"You think you've won something," Claire hissed, her composure finally shattering as she realized the depth of the trap. "If I go down, I'm taking your corporate reputation and half your personal holdings with me through long-term injunctions."

"You won't have time for injunctions," Evelyn said coldly, stepping forward. "The federal marshals were notified the moment we verified the shell company accounts in the Cayman Islands. They are waiting outside the service exit right now."

A murmur rippled through the surrounding guests, who had begun backing away slowly as the atmosphere turned toxic. The illusion was completely shattered. Claire looked around wildly, realizing that her meticulous three-year deception had unraveled in less than an hour, undone by a combination of corporate diligence and an enigmatic child who had appeared out of nowhere.

The young girl stepped out from behind Julian’s shadow, walking right up to the hem of Claire’s expensive ivory silk gown. She looked up with profound, unblinking seriousness.

"A house built on borrowed bricks always falls when the wind changes," the girl said softly.

Claire glared down at the child with a flash of genuine venom, but before she could speak, two men in dark suits—discreet security officers working in coordination with Julian’s legal team—stepped out from the archway, flanking her left and right.

"Shall we walk to the exit, Claire, or would you prefer a public escort through the ballroom?" Julian asked quietly.

Claire swallowed hard, her jaw working as she fought to maintain a shred of dignity. Without another word, she turned on her heel and walked briskly toward the service corridor, flanked by the security officers, leaving the silent ballroom behind her.
