Chapter 9: The Boardroom Reckoning

The executive boardroom of the foundation was oppressively quiet, save for the hum of the air filtration system and the muffled sounds of city traffic rising from five floors below. Five senior board members sat around the mahogany conference table, their expressions grim as Julian laid the audit report and Elena’s signed confession before them. Clara sat quietly in the corner, her arm still supported by the elastic brace, observing the institutional machinery grinding into motion.
The chairman of the board, an elderly man with decades of philanthropic service behind him, adjusted his reading glasses and scanned the confession. His hands trembled slightly with suppressed anger. "I find it difficult to fathom that someone entrusted with our outreach initiatives could engage in such deliberate embezzlement. The legal ramifications are severe."
"We have mitigated the immediate financial exposure," Julian stated, keeping his tone strictly professional. "All diverted funds have been traced, and Elena’s personal assets have been signed over to the foundation to cover the deficit before the public audit goes live. There will be no public scandal, and the community grants will proceed without interruption."
One of the female board members looked up, her gaze sharp and analytical. "And what of criminal charges, Julian? A signed confession is binding, but bypassing legal authorities sets a dangerous precedent for our governance."

"The agreement was conditional upon full restitution and immediate resignation," Julian replied, meeting her gaze without flinching. "If any future audits reveal hidden assets or bad faith cooperation, the agreement is void, and the packet goes directly to the federal prosecutor."
The room fell silent as the board members exchanged weighty glances. They understood the stakes. A public scandal would destroy decades of trust built within the community, harming the very people the foundation was created to protect. By choosing internal resolution and asset recovery, they protected the mission above all else.
