Chapter 10: Packing Up the Red Dress

Back at the estate, the afternoon sun cast long golden beams across the white hallway where the incident had occurred two days prior. The shattered console table had been removed, leaving a clean, empty space against the wall where a new, simpler oak table would eventually stand. Upstairs in the master suite, Elena packed her belongings into three heavy leather suitcases. The red dress—the symbol of her disastrous ambition—hung neatly inside a garment bag, zipped shut and discarded in the corner.

Her movements were mechanical, stripped of the frantic energy that had defined her existence for the past year. Without Julian’s financial backing and social standing, her apartment in the city felt distant and small, a stark reminder of the humble origins she had tried so desperately to outrun through fraud and manipulation.

A soft knock sounded at the open bedroom door. Clara stood in the doorway, holding a manila envelope containing the final release forms for her personal property. She didn't enter the room without permission, maintaining a respectful, cautious distance.

"The car is downstairs," Clara said quietly. "Julian won't be back until this evening. He asked me to ensure your departure went without incident."

Elena stopped folding a silk blouse, looking up at her cousin with eyes that looked hollow and defeated. "Are you happy now, Clara? You exposed the fraud, broke up the engagement, and secured your position at the foundation. Did you win everything you wanted?"

Clara stepped just inside the room, her expression devoid of malice or triumph. "This isn't about winning, Elena. You built your life on a foundation of sand, and you blamed everyone else when the tide came in. I didn't destroy your life; your choices did. I simply refused to let you destroy innocent people along the way."
