Chapter 6: Shadows of the Endowment

The dim lighting of the security office cast long, distorted shadows across the tiled floor as Julian absorbed Clara’s words. The missing restructuring funds—millions of dollars earmarked for community development projects—had been a ghost haunting the corporate ledger for the past two quarters. Julian had assumed it was bureaucratic red tape or a systemic accounting error. He looked slowly back at Elena, his expression darkening with a profound betrayal that cut far deeper than physical violence.
"Is that true?" Julian asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "The endowment account? You touched the foundation money?"
Elena backed up until her shoulders hit the cold metal casing of the server rack. The game was up; the intricate web of lies she had spun over the past year was unraveling thread by thread under the harsh fluorescent lights of the basement. She couldn't blame Clara, she couldn't blame Julian, and she certainly couldn't blame the camera on the wall. She had engineered her own downfall with calculated greed.
"I had to," Elena spat out, her voice cracking with defensive defiance. "My investments in the downtown commercial real estate project collapsed when the market shifted. I needed liquidity to cover the margin calls before the board noticed the shortfall. I was going to replace it once the winter grants cleared."

Clara shook her head slowly, her expression hardening. "Embezzlement isn't a temporary loan, Elena. It's a felony. And doing it through a charitable foundation makes it federal. You weren't just protecting our relationship; you were protecting your lifestyle at the expense of thousands of families who rely on those community grants."
Julian reached out and hit a key on the keyboard, saving a secure copy of the hallway footage to an encrypted flash drive. He pocketed the small device with a deliberate, final movement. "We go upstairs. We sit in the study, and we draft a full confession and repayment schedule. If you cooperate, Elena, we handle this internally and quietly. If you fight us on this, I hand this drive to the district attorney before sunrise."
