Chapter 3: The Digital Witness

The red light on the ceiling camera continued its steady, hypnotic blink, pulsing like an artificial heartbeat in the opulent hallway. Julian noticed it then, following Elena’s terrified gaze upward. A muscle ticked in his jaw. In their circles, privacy was a commodity bought and paid for, but the smart-home integration system installed by the previous owner linked every hallway camera directly to a cloud backup. There was no local hard drive to pull and smash; the data was already traversing fiber-optic cables toward an off-site server.
"Julian," Elena whispered, her voice dropping an octave as she reached out to touch his sleeve. "We need to talk. Privately. Downstairs. Before security flags the motion sensor."
Julian pulled his arm away with a clinical precision that hurt worse than a slap. He looked down at Clara, who was now carefully rotating her bruised wrist with a grimace. "Go to the guest suite on the ground floor. I’m going to security. We are going to pull the raw footage right now, and we are going to see exactly what happened."

Elena’s blood ran cold. Raw footage meant wide angles, clear audio, and zero room for plausible deniability. The initial shock of the fall had given way to a paralyzing dread. She followed Julian down the sweeping staircase, her high heels clicking rhythmically against the imported marble steps. Clara remained behind for a moment, supported by the banister, watching them descend into the belly of the house where the digital truth awaited them all.
Down in the security office, the monitors glowed with multi-angle feeds of the sprawling estate. The night guard had stepped out for a routine perimeter check, leaving the central console unattended. Julian dropped into the leather chair, his fingers flying across the keyboard to access the master directory. Elena stood behind him, her fingernails digging into her palms until the skin threatened to break. She knew that on screen, her push would look deliberate, vicious, and entirely unprovoked.
