Chapter 5: Whispers in the Dark

The darkness inside the study was absolute, broken only by the faint silver glimmer of the security monitor’s dying battery. Outside, the mansion was eerily quiet, the automated locking mechanisms of the West Wing humming softly as they reset without power. Clara stood beside Victor in the stifling stillness, the small silver flash drive gripped tightly in her palm like a lifeline.
“We can’t stay here,” Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the faint sound of little Leo’s soft, even breathing from his hiding spot behind the velvet curtain. “If Mrs. Vance realizes the backup drive was extracted before the wipe completed, she’ll lock down the perimeter gates and call her security detail.”
Victor nodded slowly, his silhouette imposing against the faint ambient moonlight filtering through the high library windows. “My security team answers to me, not Elena. But her personal detail—the men she hired last month under the guise of estate enhancement—are loyal to her highest bidder. Nan’s men.”
A sharp tap echoed against the reinforced glass of the French doors leading to the private balcony. Both of them froze. Clara instinctively reached out, her hand brushing against Victor’s tailored sleeve to keep him back. The tap came again, rhythmic and deliberate: three short knocks, a pause, and two long scrapes.
“That’s not Elena,” Victor murmured, his brow furrowing as he recognized the cadence. “That’s Marcus, head of corporate security. He’s been trying to reach me through an encrypted frequency for forty-eight hours.”
Victor moved silently toward the French doors, sliding the heavy latch open just enough for the cool night air to sweep into the room. Marcus, a rugged man in his late forties with a tactical vest over his civilian clothes, slipped through the opening like a ghost. He took off his night-vision goggles, his face grim.
“Sir, the perimeter has been compromised,” Marcus reported in a sharp, urgent whisper. “Three unmarked black SUVs just bypassed our primary security grid using stolen keycards. They’re positioning themselves around the main foyer. Vicarth Nan is on his way.”
Clara stepped forward from the shadows, stepping between the two men. “Then we don’t have time to wait for dawn. If Nan arrives before we have the evidence secured off-site, he’ll wipe the servers physically and silence everyone who heard that phone call.”
Marcus glanced sideways at Clara, surprised to find a maid commanding the room with such authority, but he looked to Victor for confirmation. Victor met Marcus’s gaze and gave a single, decisive nod.
“Listen to her, Marcus. She saved the primary drive from the wipe,” Victor said, his voice hard as steel. “We need to get Leo out of this house tonight. No more hiding behind corporate politics.”

Marcus unclipped a secondary tactical radio from his belt and handed it to Clara. “There’s an old service tunnel running beneath the wine cellar that leads to the southern ridge. Take the boy and the drive. I’ll stay here with Mr. Vance and give you twenty minutes before they realize the nest is empty.”
