Chapter 4: Breaking the Code

The red emergency lights pulsing from the forensic terminal cast long, erratic shadows across the book-lined walls of Victor’s study. The system counter ticked down rapidly: thirty seconds until the master vault’s physical storage units were reformatted to factory zero. All the digital breadcrumbs linking Vicarth Nan to the Vance household were vanishing in real-time.
“She’s using the override key,” Victor said, his voice dangerously low as he slammed his palm onto the desk. “The physical key is stored in the vault itself, which means she’s already accessed the secondary safe in the dressing room.”
Clara stepped forward, her eyes fixed on the cascading lines of hexadecimal code scrolling down the secondary monitor. “Not necessarily, sir. Look at the data packet headers. The wipe command isn't coming from the master terminal. It’s bouncing through a localized Bluetooth relay—someone is standing right outside this door with a paired tablet.”
Before Victor could process her words, a dull thud echoed against the heavy oak study doors, followed by the metallic screech of an override mechanism being forced from the outside. Elena was trying to breach the study from the corridor, weaponizing the estate’s automated security protocols against her own husband.
“Leo, stay right behind this bookcase,” Clara whispered gently, guiding the trembling five-year-old into a recessed alcove behind a heavy velvet curtain. The boy clutched his yellow t-shirt, his large eyes wide with fear, but he nodded bravely, trusting the young woman who had shielded him from the start.
Victor drew himself up to his full height, his tailored black suit shifting as he strode toward the door. He didn’t open it. Instead, he reached beneath the heavy mahogany desk and pulled a concealed master override lever, cutting the power grid to the entire West Wing.
The red emergency lights blinked out, plunging the study into absolute darkness save for the dim, flickering glow of the computer monitor. A frustrated scream echoed from the hallway, followed by the clatter of a dropped device against the marble floor.
“Clara,” Victor commanded in a harsh whisper. “Access the secondary bypass port on the side of the terminal. Route the outgoing data stream to an encrypted external drive before the power reserves fail completely.”
Clara didn’t hesitate. She dropped to her knees beside the glowing terminal, her fingers moving with incredible speed across the auxiliary keyboard. The lines of code turned from red to stable, steady blue. On the screen, a massive file directory appeared: project files, offshore transaction records, and dozens of intercepted voice recordings between Elena Vance and Vicarth Nan detailing the systematic dismantling of Vance Industries.
“I have the complete archive,” Clara whispered, her breath hitching as the progress bar hit one hundred percent. She pulled a small silver flash drive from the USB port just as the emergency backup batteries died, plunging the room into total silence.

Victor reached out in the darkness, his hand gripping Clara’s shoulder with firm, steady pressure. “You’ve just signed our death warrants,” he muttered grimly. “Or secured our survival.”
