Chapter 2: Shadows in the Marbled Hall

The heavy silence that followed Victor’s warning felt heavier than the marble pillars supporting the mansion’s roof. Victor towered over Elena, his gaze locked onto the glowing screen of the iPhone still clutched in Clara’s hand. The name ""Vicarth Nan"" remained frozen on the display, a silent digital ghost haunting the luxurious foyer. Victor’s face remained an unreadable mask of corporate calculation and paternal fury, yet a muscle ticked violently along his jawline.

“Explain,” Victor said, the single word dropping like a lead weight onto the polished floor.

Elena recovered her composure with practiced ease, smoothing the fabric of her red dress. She stepped forward, letting her diamond necklace catch the light. “It’s a setup, Victor. Can’t you see? The girl has been bitter about her position for weeks. She downloaded cloning software onto the house network to route calls through her device. She’s trying to extort us, and when she realized I caught her red-handed, she played this fabricated audio to frame me.”

Clara looked up from where she knelt beside Leo, whose crying had subsided into quiet, exhausted hiccups. “That is a lie, Mr. Vance,” Clara said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. “I was cleaning the West Wing library when the encrypted signal triggered my proximity alert. This phone isn’t mine; it was dropped near the service entrance by someone wearing custom tailoring—someone who knew the security codes.”

Victor shifted his gaze to Clara. His eyes searched her face for any sign of deceit, finding only exhaustion and fierce, protective determination. He knew Elena’s spending habits; he knew the offshore accounts that had been bleeding capital for the past six months. But acknowledging a security breach within his own household meant exposing vulnerabilities he had spent a lifetime concealing.

“Give me the device,” Victor ordered, holding out his hand palm-up.

Clara hesitated for a fraction of a second, weighing the risks. If she handed the phone over, Victor could wipe the metadata, protecting his family name at the cost of her innocence. Yet, keeping it meant standing alone against a powerful couple with limitless resources. Slowly, deliberately, she placed the black smartphone into his large palm.

Elena smiled triumphantly, stepping closer to her husband. “See? Now deal with her, Victor. Fire her, throw her out, and let security handle the rest before the board finds out about this absurd scandal.”

Victor didn’t answer Elena immediately. He pressed the playback button. The audio recording began to loop, the digital voice filling the grand foyer once again: “Victor's child must disappear before he finds out.”

As the sentence finished, Victor’s expression hardened into something terrifying. He pocketed the phone, looked down at his trembling son, and made a decision that would tear the Vance dynasty apart from the inside out.
