Chapter 11: The Federal Safehouse

The federal safehouse on the sixteenth floor of the Justice Department annex smelled of old paper, strong black coffee, and unyielding bureaucracy. The room was sterile, windowless, and illuminated by harsh overhead fluorescent panels that cast a pale, sickly light over the metal interrogation table in the center.

Leo sat slumped in a large, oversized office chair in the corner, fast asleep under a heavy wool blanket provided by the marshals, his messy brown hair falling across his forehead. Clara sat at the metal table opposite two federal prosecutors: Agent Vance—no relation to Victor—and Assistant U.S. Attorney Hayes.

Hayes slid the silver flash drive across the stainless-steel surface, his expression grim. “We’ve decrypted the primary partitions. The logs confirm everything: internal routing bypasses, offshore money laundering accounts tied to Vicarth Nan, and a series of recorded audio transmissions between Mrs. Elena Vance and Nan outlining the phased liquidation of Vance Industries.”

Clara kept her hands folded neatly in her lap. Her blue and white maid uniform felt heavy and suffocating under the harsh lights, a stark reminder of the world she had left behind just twenty-four hours ago. “And Mr. Vance?” she asked quietly. “Where is Victor?”

“Your employer is currently detained at the county precinct pending an internal audit of corporate security protocols,” Agent Vance replied, leaning forward with his elbows on the table. “However, based on the physical testimony you and Marcus provided, our office is preparing a formal arrest warrant for Elena Vance and Vicarth Nan on charges of corporate espionage, conspiracy, and attempted abduction.”

The door to the interrogation room clicked open. Marcus walked in, looking battered but relieved. He carried a fresh cup of coffee, setting it down gently beside Clara’s hand.

“The estate has been fully secured by federal agents,” Marcus reported quietly to the prosecutors. “Elena attempted to flee via the private helipad at dawn, but the marshals intercepted her before her pilot could lift off. She’s currently being transported here.”

Clara exhaled a long, slow breath she felt she had been holding since the moment she first heard that phone call in the hallway. The nightmare was finally coming to light. The artificial walls of wealth and privilege that had protected the corruption within the Vance household were being torn down brick by brick.

“What happens to Leo now?” Clara asked, her voice carrying a deep, maternal concern that had sustained her through every trial of the past two days.

“Child protective services will place him under temporary emergency custody of a court-appointed guardian until Victor’s legal clearance is finalized,” Hayes explained gently. “Though given your role in his protection, your statement will carry significant weight in the family court proceedings.”

Clara looked over at the corner where the little boy slept soundly, his small chest rising and falling in steady rhythm. She knew her days as a maid in the Vance mansion were over, but a new chapter was about to begin—one forged not in servitude, but in truth.
