Chapter 5: The Anatomy of a Socialite

Across town at the Montgomery family penthouse on Fifth Avenue, the reality of the crisis had detonated like a financial landmine.

Chloe Montgomery burst into her father’s private study, her mascara smudged, holding a printout of the morning's financial headlines.

"Father! What is happening?" Chloe cried out. "The news is saying Sterling-Vance Media has frozen all joint liquidity lines with our Hudson Yards retail project!"

Arthur Montgomery, a sixty-five-year-old real estate magnate with thinning silver hair and sunken eyes, sat behind his desk with a glass of neat bourbon at 10:30 AM.

"Julian lied to us, Chloe," Arthur said, his voice flat with complete defeat. "He told us he controlled sixty percent of the Vance trust's liquid reserves. We leveraged our entire commercial parcel against the promise of his corporate backing."

"Then sue him!"

"Sue him with what?" Arthur scoffed bitterly. "Julian has no personal capital. His bespoke suits, his leased sports cars, his penthouse in Soho—all of it was paid for by corporate credit lines owned by Evelyn Vance. She revoked his access this morning. His net worth is effectively zero."

Chloe sank onto the leather armchair, clutching her designer purse. "And our development?"

"Our development defaults on Friday unless we find $20 million in bridge equity," her father said, burying his head in his hands. "The Montgomery Group is bankrupt, Chloe. The gala season is over."

Chloe stared out the panoramic window at Central Park, the gold and diamond rings on her fingers feeling suddenly like cold, worthless lead.
