Chapter 14: An Unscripted Evening

On a crisp, clear evening in May, *The Green Spire Center* held its official public opening.

Over five hundred people from across New York City gathered in the illuminated greenhouse and surrounding outdoor gardens.

There was a live jazz band playing under the cedar arbor, long wooden tables covered with platters of fresh food harvested directly from the rooftop beds, children running through the strawberry terraces, and neighbors celebrating the rebirth of their community.

The Mayor of New York and several civic leaders were present, but there were no velvet ropes, no VIP lounges, and no security guards keeping people out.

Evelyn stood at the edge of the central pond, wearing a simple, elegant dark green linen dress, her hair flowing naturally over her shoulders.

Marcus walked up beside her, wearing a crisp white shirt and dark trousers, holding two glasses of sparkling cider.

"Look at this, Evelyn," Marcus said softly, gesturing toward the laughing families, the thriving plants, and the warm light glowing against the evening sky.

Evelyn took a glass, looking out over the crowd.

"We built something that lasts, Marcus," she smiled.

"No," Marcus corrected gently, turning to take her hand in his. "You built a sanctuary where people can be whole. And I want to spend the rest of my life building beside you."

Evelyn looked into his steady, honest eyes—eyes that saw her soul, not her bank vault.

"I’d like that very much, Marcus," she whispered.

They clinked their glasses together as the jazz music swelled, the warm spring breeze carrying the scent of blooming jasmine across the city.
