At 9:00 AM sharp, the mahogany double doors of the 40th-floor boardroom at Sterling-Vance Media swung open.
The ten members of the executive board—senior venture capitalists, creative directors, and legal counsels—sat around the twenty-foot glass conference table.
Julian Sterling sat at the foot of the table, his tie pulled tight, his face pale and haggard after a sleepless night of frantic phone calls to his attorneys.
At the head of the table sat Evelyn Vance.
She wore a tailored navy wool blazer over a crisp ivory blouse, her hair swept up in a clean twist, a sleek digital tablet resting before her.
"Good morning, gentlemen," Evelyn began, her voice carrying an effortless resonance that commanded immediate silence. "For the past three years, I have allowed Mr. Sterling broad operational discretion as Managing Director. However, recent developments have necessitated an immediate review of our executive governance."
Julian cleared his throat, trying to summon his usual charismatic authority. "Evelyn... members of the board... this is an unprecedented conflict of interest. Ms. Vance’s personal grievances regarding a private romantic separation have no place in a corporate governance forum."
"This has nothing to do with romance, Julian," Evelyn replied calmly, tapping her screen.
The massive wall display behind her lit up with financial spreadsheets, tax manifests, and forensic audit reports.
"Over the last eighteen months," Evelyn stated clearly, "Mr. Sterling has reallocated $4.2 million from our public infrastructure design fund to cover private jet leases, luxury hospitality entertainment, and speculative loans extended to Montgomery Real Estate’s failing commercial portfolio."
The board members gasped, leaning over their portfolios in sudden alarm.
"These were strategic relationship investments!" Julian protested, his voice rising in panic.
"These were unauthorized personal embezzlements designed to fund your social courtship of Chloe Montgomery," Evelyn corrected with lethal accuracy. "As majority shareholder, I have accepted the board's formal recommendation for your immediate termination with cause. Your equity options are voided under Section 8 of the fiduciary integrity clause."
Julian stood up, his hands shaking against the glass table. "You can't do this, Evelyn! I built this firm's public profile!"
