Chapter 12: Julian’s Plea

The peace of the winter was briefly interrupted three days before Christmas.
Julian Sterling appeared at the entrance of *The Green Spire Center*.
He wore a faded winter coat, his hair unkempt, his face thin and shadowed with weeks of humiliation and unemployment. He stood in the snowy gravel courtyard, shivering as he watched Evelyn and Marcus review garden beds through the glass greenhouse walls.
Evelyn saw him. She stepped outside into the crisp winter air, wrapping a wool scarf around her neck.
"Julian," she said, keeping ten feet of distance between them.
"Evelyn... please," Julian begged, his voice trembling with desperation. "I have lost everything. Nobody will hire me. The Montgomerys won't return my calls. My bank accounts are frozen."
He dropped to his knees in the cold gravel, tears streaming down his face.
"I was a fool, Evelyn. I didn't see what I had. I love you. I have always loved you. Give me one more chance. Make me a project manager on this center... I will do anything you ask."
Evelyn looked down at the man who had once stood over her in a five-star restaurant calling her "classless."

She felt no hatred. She felt no desire to kick him while he was down. She felt only a deep, sorrowful pity for a man who still believed that human connection could be bartered like a commodity.
