Chapter 7 - The Boiler Room Confrontation

The deafening roar of the industrial furnaces vibrated through the soles of Clara’s shoes, drowning out the ambient sounds of the estate above. Beatrice stood effortlessly on the elevated catwalk, the heavy brass wrench resting casually on her shoulder as she looked down at Clara and Rachel like a pair of misbehaving children caught stealing fruit from an orchard.
"You’re trapped down here, my dear," Beatrice called out, her voice carrying easily over the mechanical din. "Julian is locking down the surface exits as we speak. You might as well come upstairs and finish scrubbing the kitchen floor. At least then you’ll have a clean conscience when the federal indictments are handed down."
Clara stood her ground, wiping soot and damp concrete dust from her forehead. She looked up at the older woman, refusing to shrink back into the submissive posture Julian demanded.
"Your empire is built on sand, Beatrice," Clara shouted back, her voice ringing with fierce conviction. "Elena took the offshore flash drives, the federal police have my father’s preliminary statements, and your medical blackmail won't save you when the asset forfeiture warrants clear!"
Beatrice’s polite smile faltered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of genuine shock that didn't escape Clara’s watchful eyes. The old woman’s grip on the brass wrench tightened until her knuckles turned white.
"Elena is a mercenary," Beatrice snapped back, her composure slipping just enough to reveal the sharp, vicious predator underneath. "She only cares about her Swiss accounts. But you, Clara? You’re just collateral damage in a game you never had the intelligence to win."
Without warning, Beatrice raised the heavy wrench and brought it down hard against the emergency fire-suppression lever mounted on the catwalk wall.
A deafening alarm shrieked through the boiler room as overhead nozzles hissed to life, instantly flooding the space with a dense, choking white chemical foam. Visibility dropped to near zero in a matter of seconds. The caustic retardant burned Clara’s eyes and throat, forcing her to cough violently as she dropped low to the concrete floor.
"Clara! Grab my hand!" Rachel’s voice screamed from somewhere inside the thick white fog.
Clara crawled blindly forward through the slippery foam, her hands sweeping across the concrete until her fingers brushed against Rachel’s jumpsuit sleeve. Rachel hauled her upward, shoving her toward a heavy service door marked with a glowing red exit sign that hadn't been visible on the thermal map.
They burst through the door just as a massive steam pipe ruptured behind them, sending a scalding jet of white vapor hissing into the room where they had been standing just moments before.
Stumbling out into the cool night air of the underground loading dock, Clara gasped for oxygen, her lungs burning from the chemical retardant. The rain was pouring in sheets, soaking her beige sweater and dark trousers instantly.
Parked twenty feet away in the center of the concrete loading bay was the lead-lined medical transport van Rachel had mentioned. Its headlights were already on, casting long beams through the sheets of rain.

And standing directly in front of the driver’s side door, holding a heavy tactical shotgun pointed squarely at their chests, was Julian.
