Chapter 3 - The Library’s Hidden Vault

The heavy oak doors of the private library closed with a muffled thud, sealing Clara inside a room that smelled intensely of aged leather, pipe tobacco, and impending doom. The mansion was deadly quiet save for the grandfather clock ticking heavily in the corner. Clara pressed her back against the cool wood of the door, her chest rising and falling in shallow, controlled bursts. She pulled the stolen master keycard from her pocket, turning the cold plastic over in her palm. Elena’s parting words rang like a warning bell inside her skull: The safe combination behind the library painting.

Julian and Beatrice believed she was downstairs scrubbing the baseboards of the east wing. They assumed fear had lobotomized her ambition. But every insult Julian had hurled, every degrading task Beatrice assigned, only sharpened Clara’s focus. She had not come here simply to suffer as a maid; she had come to find out what happened to her missing older sister, Maya, whose last known coordinates pointed directly to this cursed estate six months ago.

Clara moved stealthily across the Persian rug toward the far wall, where an enormous, oil-painted portrait of a stern 19th-century patriarch dominated the dark wood paneling. According to family rumors she had pieced together before her father’s arrest, her sister had been Julian’s lead financial analyst before vanishing into thin air—just as a hundred million dollars mysteriously vanished from corporate offshore accounts.

With trembling fingers, Clara reached up and gripped the heavy wooden frame of the painting. She heaved upward, sliding the massive canvas along hidden brass tracks. To her shock, the painting swung outward effortlessly on a pivot hinge, revealing a flush electronic keypad embedded directly into the reinforced concrete wall.

A soft blue LED glow pulsed from the keypad screen, casting an eerie light across Clara’s determined face. She reached into her pocket again, pulling out a small, ultra-thin USB data logger she had salvaged from her father’s desk before the police raid. If Julian used digital encryption for his vault, this device could intercept the master override sequence the next time someone accessed the system.

Suddenly, the library door handle rattled violently from the hallway.

Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat as she scrambled to push the heavy oil painting back into its original position. The latch clicked open just as she threw herself behind a tall leather wingback armchair, pulling her knees tightly to her chest.

Julian stepped into the room, his footsteps heavy and uneven. He was muttering curses under his breath, holding a fresh glass of amber liquor. He walked straight toward the hidden wall panel, punching in a six-digit code without even looking at the screen. The heavy steel vault door hissed open, exposing shelves stacked high with stacks of bearer bonds and digital hard drives.

As Julian reached inside to retrieve a manila folder, a small photograph fluttered out from the stack and drifted silently downward, landing face-up on the Persian rug just inches from Clara’s hiding spot. Clara stared at it through a gap in the chair legs. It was a polaroid of her missing sister, Maya, tied to a metal chair in this exact room, smiling weakly while holding today’s financial newspaper.
