Chapter 6 - The Subterranean Trap

The monitor screen flickered with static as Julian’s face filled the frame, illuminated by the harsh overhead fluorescent lighting. He wasn't yelling; his calm, measured demeanor was infinitely more terrifying than any outburst of rage.

"Rachel, my dear," Julian’s voice echoed softly through the intercom speakers mounted along the concrete corridor. "I wondered how long it would take you to crawl out of the maintenance tunnels and find our new houseguest. Did you really think I didn’t know you were hiding down here for the last eight months?"

Rachel froze, her face turning pale as ghost. She dropped her cracked smartphone, the glass shattering against the hard concrete floor. "He’s tracking the local network frequency," she gasped, grabbing Clara’s arm. "We have less than sixty seconds before the blast doors seal this entire wing."

Clara didn’t panic. The sheer adrenaline coursing through her veins sharpened her focus into a laser-like clarity. "Where does the emergency drainage tunnel lead?" she demanded, pointing toward a rusted iron grate set low into the back wall of the utility alcove.

"It leads out to the storm drains near the river," Rachel answered quickly, though her eyes were filled with doubt. "Valve control is on the other side of the main boiler room, right past Julian’s private office."

"Then that’s our path," Clara said, ripping the yellow cleaning rag from her pocket and tying it securely around her knuckles like a makeshift knuckle-wrap. "If Julian wants to play hunter, we’ll show him what happens when the prey fights back."

They scrambled through the rusted iron grate just as the heavy pneumatic doors at both ends of the corridor slammed shut with a thunderous metallic crash. Sparks flew as automatic deadbolts locked into place, plunging the hallway into absolute darkness except for the pulsing red glow of emergency strobe lights.

Crawling through the damp, narrow drainage pipe, Clara could hear the muffled thuds of Julian’s tactical boots patrolling the floor directly above them. Rachel led the way, using a small penlight to navigate the twisting labyrinth of corroded metal pipes.

"Why didn’t you escape months ago?" Clara asked over the sound of rushing water, her voice echoing in the confined space.

"Because Julian holds my brother’s medical life support hostage at a private clinic in Zurich," Rachel shouted back without stopping. "Everything in this empire is connected to money, blood, and blackmail. You think you’re fighting one man, Clara, but you’re fighting an entire corporate syndicate that owns half the politicians on the East Coast."

They reached the end of the drainage pipe, pushing open a heavy rusted hatch that opened out into the subterranean boiler room. The massive industrial furnaces roared with intense heat, casting long, dancing shadows across the concrete floor.

As Clara stepped out of the hatch, a sharp click echoed from the catwalk above the boilers.

Beatrice stood on the elevated metal walkway, wearing her silk floral bathrobe despite the industrial heat. In her right hand, she held a heavy brass wrench, tapping it rhythmically against the railing while looking down at them with a cold, maternal smile.

"Running away so soon, girls?" Beatrice called out smoothly. "And here I thought Clara was finally learning how to be a good maid."
