Chapter 10 - The Aftermath and the Warning

The amber glow of dawn finally broke through the heavy grey storm clouds, casting a weak, watery light across the crime-scene tape that cordoned off the entire mansion estate. Federal agents and forensic investigators milled about the property like worker ants, bagging evidence, downloading server cores, and hauling boxes of documents out of the grand front doors.
Clara stood on the front lawn wrapped in a thick wool blanket provided by the paramedics, watching as her sister Maya was carefully loaded into an ambulance bound for a secure metropolitan hospital. The medical team assured Clara that Maya would make a full physical recovery, though the psychological scars would take years to heal.
Rachel walked over, holding a steaming paper cup of black coffee, and handed it to Clara with a sympathetic nod. "You look like you haven't slept in a week," Rachel said quietly, leaning against a stone pillar.
"I haven't," Clara replied, sipping the bitter coffee to chase away the residual chill in her bones. She looked back at the mansion. Without Julian and Beatrice, the sprawling estate looked hollow, almost ghostly in the morning light. "What happens now, Rachel? Beatrice said something before she was taken away... she warned me that we woke up monsters higher up the food chain."
Rachel’s expression darkened instantly. She looked around to ensure none of the federal agents were paying attention to their conversation. "Beatrice wasn't lying. Julian and his mother were just the domestic front. The real financial backing for this operation comes from a shadow board of directors known only as the Vanguard Group—a cartel of corrupt international bankers who launder money for global arms dealers and drug syndicates."
Clara felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. "And you think they’re just going to let us walk away after we handed their domestic laundering operation to the DOJ?"
Before Rachel could answer, a sleek black sedan with darkened windows pulled up slowly along the gravel driveway outside the police perimeter. The rear door clicked open, and a man in an immaculate charcoal-grey bespoke suit stepped out. He wore polished leather shoes that didn't have a single speck of mud on them, despite the torrential rain from the night before.
The man adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and walked straight toward Clara and Rachel, ignoring the federal agents who instinctively stepped back as he approached. He had an aura of absolute, terrifying authority that made Julian look like an amateur street thug.
"Miss Clara Vance, I presume," the man said smoothly, his voice cultured and devoid of any emotion. "Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mr. Sinclair. I represent the primary stakeholders of the assets your friend Elena so carelessly leaked to the federal authorities."
Clara clutched her wool blanket tighter around her shoulders, refusing to cower. "If you’re here to threaten me, save your breath. The DOJ already has everything."
Mr. Sinclair smiled faintly, a chilling expression that didn't reach his cold grey eyes. He reached into his breast pocket and withdrew a small, unsealed manila envelope, holding it out toward her with two fingers.
"The DOJ has what we wanted them to have, my dear," Sinclair murmured softly. "Julian and Beatrice were liabilities who grew too arrogant. You didn't destroy our network, Clara. You merely helped us prune the dead branches."

Clara stared at the envelope, her hand trembling slightly as she reached out to take it. Inside was a single sheet of paper containing her father’s complete exoneration—and a non-negotiable contract assigning her full ownership of the multi-billion-dollar corporate shell company that had funded Julian’s entire operation.
