Chapter 7

The heavy wooden door of the greenhouse burst inward with a splintering crash as a massive guard in tactical gear stepped inside, sweeping the beam of a tactical flashlight across the damp interior. Elena and her rugged companion had already scrambled behind a towering stack of rotting wooden crates, holding their breath as the harsh white light swept frantically over the concrete floor just feet away from their hiding spot.
“Sector four is clear, but I found shattered glass near the north wing,” the guard spoke into a shoulder radio, his voice a low, gravelly rumble. “Target is likely heading toward the perimeter fence. Notify the outer gate units to lock down all vehicle exits immediately.”
The heavy footsteps began to retreat toward the broken doorway, giving Elena and the rugged man a desperately narrow window to act. The man glanced at Elena, signaling with a sharp nod toward a rusted service hatch set low into the back brick wall of the greenhouse, half-hidden by thick vines.
“On my count, we hit the hatch and run for the drainage ditch,” the man whispered into her ear, his hand sliding a heavy iron crowbar from his belt. “Don't look back, no matter what you hear behind us.”
Elena nodded, her adrenaline surging past the throbbing pain in her ankle. She gripped the leather journal tightly in one hand, ready to sprint into the freezing night air.
With a sudden, violent heave, the rugged man jammed the crowbar into the rusted seams of the service hatch and pried it open with a loud, metallic screech that immediately drew a shout from the guard near the doorway.
“Hey! Over there! Stop right there!” the guard bellowed, spinning around and raising his weapon.
“Run!” the man roared, shoving Elena through the open hatch just as a bullet sparked off the concrete wall inches from her head, leaving a smoking crater in the brickwork.
Elena scrambled through the narrow opening, tumbling headfirst into the muddy, freezing waters of a deep concrete drainage ditch that ran beneath the estate's perimeter wall. The icy water shocked her system, stealing the breath from her lungs for a terrifying second, but she forced herself up, wading through the sludge as heavy boots thudded against the ground right above her head.
The rugged man dropped down into the ditch beside her a second later, grabbing her jacket collar and pulling her forward through the culvert. The darkness swallowed them whole as they plunged deeper into the underground drainage pipe, leaving the shouting guards and the brightly lit mansion far behind them in the damp, freezing mist.
After what felt like hours of crawling through the cramped, foul-smelling concrete tube, a faint glow of amber streetlights appeared ahead. They reached the end of the culvert, pulling themselves out into a thick patch of overgrown weeds that bordered an abandoned industrial park on the outskirts of the town.

Elena collapsed onto the dry dirt, gasping for air as mud and dirty water soaked through her clothes. She looked up at the towering, rusted cranes of the defunct shipping yard, realizing they had finally breached the estate's impenetrable borders. But as she opened the leather journal to catch her breath, a chilling discovery froze her blood.
The final pages of the ledger weren't just financial records; they contained a detailed blueprint of the town’s police department, complete with the home addresses of every high-ranking officer on the payroll—including the chief of police, who was listed as the primary investor in the entire operation.
