Chapter 1

The stinging slap of the wet cleaning rag against Elena’s cheek left a cold, heavy trail of water dripping down her chin, but the psychological blow was far sharper. She stood frozen in the center of the brightly lit kitchen, her white cabinets gleaming with a cruel, sterile perfection. The young man in the faded blue t-shirt and grey sweatpants crossed his arms, his face hardening into an expression of absolute disdain.

“You're not here to be a princess,” he barked, his voice cutting through the silent tension of the room like a jagged knife. “You're a maid now. Earn your place.”

Elena blinked slowly, droplets of dirty water falling from her eyelashes as she stared at him in profound shock. Her mind raced back to the life she had lost just forty-eight hours ago—a world of designer gowns, endless luxury, and absolute adoration. Now, she was nothing more than an indentured servant trapped in a nightmare.

From the shadowy doorway, the older woman in the beige robe with delicate floral embroidery observed the scene with a chilling sense of satisfaction. Her arms remained crossed over her chest, a thin, approving smile playing at the corners of her mouth.

“Establish the rules immediately,” the older woman said, her voice smooth and gravelly with age. “If you don't control the woman from the first day, she will control you.”

Elena looked between the two of them, her chest rising and falling with restrained anger. She slowly reached down, picked up the heavy leather suitcase resting near the kitchen island, and unlatched the brass clasps. Inside lay neatly stacked bundles of crisp hundred-dollar bills, the very funds that had supposedly bought her freedom or perhaps sealed her eternal damnation. With deliberate, shaking hands, she began packing the remaining cash into the case, her expression turning into a mask of cold compliance.

“All right,” Elena whispered, her voice trembling slightly before steadying into a quiet resolve. “I understand.”

Without waiting for their permission, she snapped the suitcase shut, the loud metallic click echoing sharply through the quiet house. She hoisted the heavy bag by its handle, turned her back on the kitchen, and began walking purposefully toward the grand wooden staircase leading to the upper levels. Her tan coat swished against her legs as she took the first step upward.

The young man frowned, watching her sudden, unapproved departure with a mixture of confusion and irritation.

“Elena...” he called out, his tone shifting from authoritative to genuinely alarmed. “What are you doing?”

Elena paused on the fourth step, turning her head just enough for him to see the dangerous glint in her eyes. “I'm going to pack the rest of my things, boss. But before I finish, there's something upstairs you need to see.”
