Chapter 5

The shattering of the window glass sounded like an explosion in the quiet upstairs bedroom, showering the overgrown garden below with glittering shards. Elena threw her weight forward, ignoring the sharp sting of a glass splinter slicing through the fabric of her sleeve and grazing her skin. She vaulted over the wooden sill, dropping hard onto the sloping shingle roof of the porch below.

Her boots lost traction for a agonizing second, sending her sliding down the steep incline of the roof amidst a cascade of loose moss and gravel. She scrambled desperately, clawing at the rough shingles until her fingers found purchase on the edge of the gutter. With a breathless grunt, she swung her legs over the side and dropped the final ten feet onto the soft soil of the overgrown flowerbed below.

The impact jarred her entire body, sending a sharp wave of pain shooting up her spine and right ankle. She bit down hard on her lower lip to keep from crying out, clutching the leather journal tightly against her chest. Above her, the older woman’s face appeared in the shattered window frame, framed by the harsh indoor light like a vengeful specter peering down from a tower.

“You can run across the lawn, Elena, but you cannot outrun the debt!” the older woman shouted down, her voice carrying a chilling, distorted echo that chilled the night air. “Every door in this town belongs to us! You are walking right back into a cage!”

Elena ignored the taunt, pulling herself up from the dirt and forcing her throbbing ankle to bear her weight. The pain was excruciating, but the adrenaline coursing through her veins acted as a temporary shield against the physical trauma. She ducked beneath the heavy oak branches of the overgrown hedge, plunging into the labyrinthine darkness of the estate’s neglected rear gardens.

The moon was hidden behind a thick blanket of heavy storm clouds, plunging the grounds into an oppressive, ink-black darkness. Every shadow looked like a crouching figure, and every rustle of the wind through the dead leaves sounded like approaching footsteps. She knew she couldn't stay on the property for long; the perimeter walls were high, topped with rusted barbed wire and motion-activated security cameras that she had seen on the digital tablet upstairs.

As she limped past an old, rotting greenhouse, a sudden beam of bright yellow light cut through the darkness a few yards away, sweeping methodically across the lawn. Someone was out here searching for her already, moving with systematic precision. It wasn't the young man, nor was it the elderly matriarch; the heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots on gravel signaled a trained professional, someone hired specifically to hunt down runaways who knew too much.

Elena pressed her back against the mossy brick wall of the greenhouse, holding her breath as the bright beam of light danced dangerously close to her hiding spot. The light illuminated the swirling dust motes in the air, casting long, eerie shadows that stretched across the grass. Her fingers traced the worn leather binding of the journal in her hands, searching for a clue, an address, a name of someone outside this hellhole who could actually help her.

Suddenly, a heavy hand clamped down firmly over her mouth from behind, cutting off the gasp that threatened to escape her throat. Another arm wrapped around her waist like a steel band, lifting her bodily off the ground and dragging her backward into the absolute pitch-black interior of the ruined greenhouse.
