Chapter 3

The young man froze, his hand hovering mid-air as if he had been physically struck by her words. The color drained slightly from his face, exposing the faint, nervous twitch in his jaw that he desperately tried to suppress. For a split second, the mask of absolute control slipped entirely, revealing a scared, desperate individual hiding beneath the facade of a cruel tyrant.
“What did you say?” he demanded, his voice tightening dangerously as he took another step toward the desk. “What did you touch, Elena?”
Elena did not flinch. She kept her posture upright and defensive, drawing upon the quiet strength she didn't know she possessed. She slowly lifted her right hand, revealing the top journal she had managed to pull from the safe just before he entered the room. The faded gold lettering on the leather cover caught the dim light of the overhead bulb, spelling out a family name that the young man thought he had buried decades ago.
“I touched the history of this house,” Elena said quietly, her eyes locked onto his wide, panicked pupils. “Your mother downstairs told me to establish the rules immediately, didn't she? Well, I think it's time we establish some new ones. Starting with the truth about where all this money in my suitcase actually came from.”
The young man lunged forward with surprising speed, his hand shooting out to grab the leather journal from her grip. But Elena was faster; she anticipated the movement and sidestepped sharply, sending the heavy wooden chair crashing against the wall. The sudden noise echoed through the quiet hallways, a clear signal that would undoubtedly draw the attention of the older woman waiting downstairs.
Panic flared in the young man's eyes as he realized the precariousness of their situation. He lowered his voice to a harsh, desperate whisper, abandoning all pretense of authority.
“Put that book down, Elena, unless you want both of us to suffer the consequences,” he warned, his breathing ragged and uneven. “You don't understand what my mother is capable of. That money, this house, everything you see—it’s all built on a foundation of lies and blood. If she finds out you've been reading that ledger, she won't just make you a maid. She'll make you disappear entirely.”
Elena’s heart skipped a beat, but she forced herself to maintain a steady facade. The threat was palpable, dripping with a terrifying sincerity that chilled her to the bone. Yet, instead of cowering, a grim realization settled over her. The suitcase full of cash wasn't an escape route provided by benefactors; it was hush money, a payoff meant to buy her silence regarding an operation much darker than she had ever imagined.
Before she could formulate a response, the slow, deliberate sound of heavy footsteps echoed from the stairs once again. Someone else was coming up, moving with a chilling, unhurried rhythm that signaled absolute authority. The older woman in the floral robe was approaching the room, and the heavy mahogany door began to swing slowly open.

The young man grabbed Elena by the arm, his grip bruisingly tight as he pulled her toward the dark corner of the room.
“Quiet,” he hissed in her ear, his breath hot against her skin. “She’s at the door.”
