Chapter 3: Blood and Paper**

"What do you mean, a signature?" Elena demanded, helping Clara into a booth and sliding a mug of hot black coffee into her shaking hands.

Clara took a ragged sip, steam rising past her sunken cheeks. "Julian’s empire is built on counterfeit sand. The creditors, the offshore banks—they’re closing in. My late husband left the family trust entirely in Leo’s name. Julian cannot touch a single dollar until the boy turns eighteen—unless Leo is declared legally unfit, under Julian's sole conservatorship."

Elena felt sick. "He’s going to institutionalize his own son."

"Worse," Clara said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "He’s taking him across the border tonight. Once Leo is out of the country, Julian files the paperwork through a shell company in Panama. Leo will disappear into a private facility, and Julian walks away with eighty million dollars."

"And you?" Elena asked. "Why put you in that cage?"

"Because I had the original deed," Clara said, tapping a bruised finger against her chest. "I refused to tell him where it was hidden. So he brought me here. He wanted to show me that even in public, no one would dare look inside the box."

Elena glanced at the empty counter, then at the clock above the kitchen pass. It read 10:45 PM.

"Where is the Blackwood Vault?" Elena asked, untying her apron.

"The old estate at Mile Marker 14," Clara replied, catching Elena’s wrist. "You can't go there, Elena. Marcus is armed, and Julian has lost whatever human soul he was born with."

"I spent four years watching that little boy come in here, drawing pictures on napkins while his father counted money in the corner," Elena said firmly, grabbing her coat and the keys to her beat-up pickup truck. "I’m not letting him turn that child into a ghost."
