Chapter 2: The Sound of Iron**

The diner fell dead quiet, save for the hum of the neon lights and the rhythmic tap of Marcus’s shoes stepping across the tiles. Marcus placed a small, brass padlock key onto the counter next to Elena’s half-empty coffee pot.
"Ten minutes after we leave," Marcus murmured, his gray eyes tired and hollow. "Not a second sooner."
Julian didn't wait. He hauled Leo toward the glass front door. The child didn't scream; he had already learned that crying in front of Julian only prolonged the silence that followed. Instead, Leo’s hazel eyes locked onto Elena’s, wide and terrified, pleading for something the world had never taught him to name: safety.
The bell above the diner door jingled softly as the heavy oak door snapped shut behind them. Headlights cut through the downpour outside as Julian’s black sedan rumbled to life, vanishing into the pitch-black mountain highway.
Elena didn't wait ten minutes.
She snatched the brass key from the counter, grabbed a heavy meat mallet from under the grill, and rushed to the corner.
The chains groaned as she forced the key into the padlock. The mechanism clicked open. Unwinding the heavy links, she wrenched open the jukebox’s reinforced back panel.
The woman inside tumbled forward into Elena’s arms. It was Clara Vance—once the matriarch of the county's wealthiest timber dynasty, now bruised, trembling, and frail.
"Clara," Elena whispered, wrapping her own wool cardigan around the shivering woman. "What did he do to you?"
May you like
Clara coughed, her knuckles white as she gripped Elena’s apron. "He’s not taking Leo to the city... Elena, he’s taking him to the Blackwood Vault. He’s liquidating everything. The boy is the final signature."
