Chapter 15: The Melody of Tomorrow**

On a warm Friday evening in late August, the Starlight Diner was alive with laughter, the sizzle of burgers on the flat top, and the hum of friendly conversation.

Clara sat in the center booth, watching Leo demonstrate a card trick to Marcus, who pretended to be completely baffled by the boy’s slight of hand.

"How did you do that?" Marcus gasped, shaking his gray head in mock disbelief. "That king was in my hand a second ago!"

"Magic, Marcus!" Leo giggled, his hazel eyes sparkling with pure, unburdened joy. "It's all in the fingers!"

Elena stepped out from behind the counter, carrying a tray of fresh cherry pie. She placed a slice in front of each of them, wiping her hands on her clean white apron.

Leo looked up at Elena, tugged on her apron string, and handed her a quarter. "Can I pick the song tonight, Mom?"

Elena’s heart swelled every time she heard the word. "Go ahead, sweetheart. Anything you want."

Leo ran over to the corner, dropped the coin into the jukebox, and pressed a combination of buttons.

The machine clicked, the mechanical arm selected a record, and a warm, uplifting acoustic melody filled the diner. Leo began to dance a silly, clumsy jig in the middle of the aisle, making Clara laugh so hard she had to wipe away a tear.

Elena leaned against the counter beside Marcus, watching the boy laugh in the golden glow of the neon lights.

"He’s going to be just fine, Elena," Marcus murmured softly.

"No, Marcus," Elena smiled, her eyes following the boy as he twirled across the floor. "He’s going to be better than fine. He’s going to be free."
