Chapter 9: The Foundation of Iron

Saturday morning arrived with crisp, golden sunshine over the San Leandro community farm.

Sitting on an upturned wooden crate beside a massive 1964 John Deere tractor was Thomas Lin, wearing his stained overalls, wiping an oily socket wrench with a cotton rag.

Julian arrived at 6:55 AM, wearing heavy leather work gloves and steel-toed boots.

Thomas didn't look up immediately. He tapped the rusted steel manifold with his wrench, listening to the hollow ring of the metal.

""The hydraulic piston on the rear lift is seized, Julian,"" Thomas said, his deep voice carrying the calm authority of forty years in the mills. ""It takes two men to break the lock-nut. One to hold the cheater bar, and one to turn the torque.""

Julian stepped onto the gravel, rolled up his sleeves, and took the heavy steel cheater bar from the dirt.

""Tell me where to hold, Mr. Lin,"" Julian said firmly.

For eight straight hours, the two men worked in the dirt beneath the oak trees.

They did not discuss high society. They did not mention the country club, the broken wedding, or the newspapers. They spoke of metal fatigue, hydraulic pressure, soil nitrogen levels, and the proper way to weld cast iron without cracking the seam.

Julian’s hands blistered, his forearms were scraped by rusted bolts, and his shirt was soaked with black gear oil. But he never complained, never asked for a break, and never let go of the bar when the torque grew heavy.

At four o’clock in the afternoon, Thomas turned the ignition key.

The ancient diesel engine coughed, spat a ring of grey smoke into the clear air, and roared to life with a deep, rhythmic, thunderous purr.

Thomas cut the engine, wiped his brow with a greasy bandanna, and stepped down from the tractor.

He reached into his cooler, pulled out two cold bottles of root beer, and handed one to Julian.

""You have good hands, Julian,"" Thomas said, clinking his bottle against Julian’s. ""They just needed some work that was honest.""

Julian took a long drink, feeling the cold sweetness wash down his parched throat, feeling an immovable sense of peace settle deep into his bones.
