Chapter 5: The Morning After

By dawn, the scandal at the Vance-Lin wedding had become the lead headline in the regional business and society columns.
The headlines were not gentle:
*“VANCE DYNASTY SHUT OUT: BRIDE WALKS AFTER BLUE-COLLAR PARENTS EXILED TO SERVICE CORRIDOR.”*
Video clips recorded by younger tech executives in the second row had gone viral on social media overnight, accumulating millions of views and sparking widespread public debate on class arrogance, elder respect, and the performative nature of elite philanthropy.
In the penthouse boardroom of Vance Capital in downtown San Francisco, Julian sat alone at the massive glass conference table.
His father, Richard Vance, stormed into the room, throwing a stack of printed financial newspapers onto the table with enough force to send them sliding across the glass.
""Three institutional pension funds just pulled their capital allocations from our green infrastructure fund, Julian!"" Richard roared, his face mottled with fury. ""The California Public Employees Retirement System issued a formal statement saying they will not do business with an executive who treats blue-collar retirees like second-class citizens!""
Julian didn't look up from his hands. ""She wasn't wrong, Father. We put them by the trash.""
""We put them where they wouldn't ruin the photographs!"" Beatrice snapped from the doorway, her eyes dark with sleepless rage. ""She was an associate architect at a non-profit firm! We elevated her! We gave her access to our world!""
Julian slowly stood up, looking at his mother. For the first time in thirty-one years, the gilded veil had fallen from his eyes.
""We didn't elevate her, Mother,"" Julian said, his voice hollow and dead. ""She was the only real thing in this entire family. And we threw her away because her father had calluses on his hands.""

He grabbed his coat from the back of his chair, left his corporate phone on the glass table, and walked out of the building.
